Tug Hill -- Still Riding...
By Magnum

Friday, 20 March 2009, at 12:40 a.m.
The temperature is approximately 32 F degrees. The last few days have been pretty warm and sunny, with a temperature high in the upper 40's.  There’s approximately 8 to 24 inches of snow on the Hill. The lower elevation areas, like Turin and Boonville have scattered to 14 inches.  There are many areas where the ground is showing. The sun and warm temperatures have been brutal on the snow cover and conditions.  Brantingham has approximately scattered to 8 inches of snow on the ground, with the same as Boonville, with scattered to bare areas.  These are estimated snow depths on average. Traffic in the area has been low, but there are a few riders still running the trails.

There's snow in the forecast for Saturday and hopefully it'll be enough to not only improve the current conditions, but cover the bare spots. The Hill is still ridable, however there are some bare spots. Most are still passable and this may be the last good ride of the season. Pray or do a snow dance for a final blast of snow and hopefully the season will be prolonged a week or two.  Even if the Hill doesn't receive another snow fall, there will be some riding, however the bare spots will grow.  As of now the only place to find consistent snow cover and good conditions is on the the Southern part of the Hill, towards Barrow's Performance, as that club is the only club still grooming.  It looks like the Plateau Riders' club has been out too, however there's bare spots and rollers.  There's also free parking just South of Barrow's, for good access to the trails.  The daily reports basically end as the grooming stops.  Without grooming, the trails will get progressively worst.  I'll continue to update the reports until there's no riding left, it just won't be daily.  Tonight, the trails are hard packed, with loose snow on top and some slushy spots.  Note that the wet and slushy areas are freezing as the temperatures drop.  That goes for all trails.  The trail system from West Leyden, North to the Hill was in mostly good condition. Southern Tug Hill's club has been one of the only clubs still grooming.  Continuing through Barrows Performance and up McGoldrick Truck Trail, to the intersection of Number 9 Trail, was in mostly good condition.  Use McGoldrick, as it leads you right to the trail heading to the Southern part of the Hill or the Sportsman’s, instead of using Michigan Mills Road, which is bare.  Plumber Road, to Smith Road was in fair to good condition, with thin to bare and icy spots. Heading off the Hill, down to Gomer Hill Road, near the Towpath Inn, in Turin, was in fair to good condition, with thin to bare and icy spots.  Back to the top of the Hill… Number 9 trail to Tabolts corners was in fair to good condition, with rollers.  As you approach Tabolts Corners, there's some bare spots. It looks like the Plataue Riders' club has been out trying to flatten this area. Carpenter Road to Timberview was in good to fair condition. Heading South of Timberview, crossing Route 26, heading towards Brantingham was in fair to poor condition, with thin to bare and icy, wet spots. The Railroad Bed, heading to the Sportsmans was in fair to good condition, with some bare spots. Tabolts Road was in fair condition, with wet spots.  Houseville Gulf Road was in fair condition, with some wet areas.  Graves Road was in fair to good condition, with bare spots.  The French Road was in fair to good condition, with icy and bare spots. Leonards Lane Road was in fair to good condition, with bare spots.  Continuing on Centerville Road to Flat Rock Inn, was in fair to poor condition, with icy areas and long stretches of bare spots. This trail usually goes first and is probably the worst on the Hill.  It's still passable.  Flat Rock Road to the intersection of Parker & Olin Road was in fair condition with thin to bare spots and ice. Parker Road to the Montague Inn was in fair condition, with icy spots. Olin Road to the Tug Hill Inn was in fair to good condition, with icy and bare spots. On the lower elevation areas, heading to the drive in theater, from Marino’s Pizza, in Lyons Falls/Turin, is essentially not rdable. From Burdicks Crossing Road, to Sweeney Road and continuing to Middle Road, to North-South Road, to Brantingham, to the Pine Tree Inn, located in the middle of Brantingham, is mostly bare.  You're better off driving here by vehicle or trailering in. Continuing down Partridgeville Road, towards Stillwater, passing the Coach Light Inn and Trailside Restaurant & Tavern, is mostly bare. From Brantingham to Stillwater was in fair condition, with thin to bare areas and ice. Heading through Boonville is basically closed.  The Railroad tracks heading to Old Forge from Forestport and Woodgate were in poor condition, with rails showing.  The trails in that area are in fair condition, with thin to bare and wet areas. Continuing through Thendara and Big Moose Station, the Railroad tracks were in poor condition, with rails showing.  Ride early for the best conditions…

When riding the area, be alert to riding in fields, where stumps, rocks and debris are shielded by snow. Open fields are full of hidden surprises. Just stay on the marked trails and you'll be fine. Be alert to riding on lakes and reservoirs. Always talk to locals before riding on what appears to be frozen water. Ride At Your Own Risk.

Friday is expected to be clear, with a temperature high in the mid 30's.  Saturday into Sunday may bring snow showers, with a temperature high in the upper 30's.  Monday through Wednesday is expected to be clear,  with a temperature high in the mid to upper 30's.  Wednesday night into Thursday may bring snow.  We'll see what develops...

Tug Hill -- Spring Forward...
By Magnum

Sunday, 08 March 2009, at 12:08 a.m.
The temperature is approximately 38 F degrees. It rained for most of the day on Friday into Saturday and then again Saturday evening, with a temperature high in the lower 40's.  There’s approximately 16 to 30 inches of snow on the Hill. The lower elevation areas, like Turin and Boonville have 4scattered to 18 inches.  There are many areas where the ground is showing. Brantingham has approximately scattered to 12 inches of snow on the ground, with the same as Boonville, with scattered to bare areas.  These are estimated snow depths on average. Traffic in the area was low, although there were a good amount of sledders riding.

Tonight, the trails are hard packed and well saturated.  There was no ride this evening, but I thought I'd give everyone an update.  The rain and warm weather have depleted a good amount of snow.  The lower elevation areas have taken the biggest hit and without any new snow, it's going to be difficult getting through theses areas without hitting any bare and muddy spots.  I like to be a "Glass half full" kind of person and it's still relatively early in the month.  Hopefully we'll get one last blast of snow to blanket the area.  It's never too late to start the snow dance.

There's a chance of rain on Sunday, with a temperature high in the lower 40''s.  Monday inti Tuesday there's a chance of rain mixed ith snow, with a temperature high in the mid 30's.  Wednesday day may bring more rain, before changing over to snow by evening, with the temperature highs in the lower 40's.  Thursday may bring more snow.  We'll see what develops...

Tuesday, 03 March 2009, at 12:50 a.m.
The temperature is approximately 2 F degrees. Monday was mostly overcast, with a temperature high in the lower 20's.  The snow that most of the lower states and East coast received, missed us.  At least the temperatures have been low, preserving the snow we do have.  There’s approximately 20 to 36+ inches of snow on the Hill. The lower elevation areas, like Turin and Boonville have 4 to 24+ inches.  There are some areas where the ground is showing. Tonight, the trails are hard packed. The trail system from West Leyden, North to the Hill was in good to fair condition. Continuing through Barrows Performance and up McGoldrick Truck Trail, to the intersection of Number 9 Trail, was in good to fair condition.  Use McGoldrick, as it leads you right to the trail heading to the Southern part of the Hill or the Sportsman’s, instead of using Michigan Mills Road, which is bare.  Plumber Road, to Smith Road was in good to fair condition, with thin spots. Heading off the Hill, down to Gomer Hill Road, near the Towpath Inn, in Turin, was in good to fair condition.  Back to the top of the Hill… Number 9 trail to Tabolts corners was in fair condition, with rollers. Carpenter Road to Timberview was in good to fair condition. Heading South of Timberview, crossing Route 26, heading towards Brantingham was in good to fair condition, with thin and icy spots. Tug Hill -- Temperatures Drop...
By Magnum

Sunday, 01 March 2009, at 12:23 a.m.
The temperature is approximately 6 F degrees. The snow that fell into Saturday morning wasn't enough to cover and recover some of the areas that were hard hit by the recent rain.  The drop in temperatures have been extremely helpful in all areas, to at least help to maintain flat trails and good riding conditions.  There’s approximately 20 to 36+ inches of snow on the Hill. The lower elevation areas, like Turin and Boonville have 4 to 24+ inches.  There are some areas where the ground is showing. Brantingham has approximately 4 to 18+ inches of snow on the ground, with the same as Boonville, with scattered to bare areas.  These are estimated snow depths on average. Traffic in the area was busy.  Many riders ignored the less favorable forecast and traveled to the area.

Tug Hill -- The Rain Shouldn't Stop You...

Wednesday, 25 February 2009, at 12:08 a.m.
The temperature is approximately 9 F degrees. Tuesday was mostly sunny, with a temperature high in the lower teens.  There’s approximately 24 to 36+ inches of snow on the Hill. The lower elevation areas, like Turin and Boonville have 8 to 24+ inches. Brantingham has approximately 8 to 18+ inches of snow on the ground.  These are estimated snow depths on average. Traffic in the area was low.

Tonight, the trails are hard packed, with loose, drifting snow on top. The trail system from West Leyden, North to the Hill was groomed and in good condition. Continuing through Barrows Performance and up McGoldrick Truck Trail, to the intersection of Number 9 Trail, was groomed and in good condition.  Use McGoldrick, as it leads you right to the trail heading to the Southern part of the Hill or the Sportsman’s.  Plumber Road, to Smith Road was in good to fair condition. Heading off the Hill, down to Gomer Hill Road, near the Towpath Inn, in Turin, was in good to fair condition.  Back to the top of the Hill… Number 9 trail to Tabolts corners was in fair to good condition, with bumps and rollers. Carpenter Road to Timberview was in good to fair condition. Heading South of Timberview, crossing Route 26, heading towards Brantingham was in good to fair condition. Be alert through this area, especially at night, as the trail marking is hard to see. The Railroad Bed, heading to the Sportsmans was in good to fair condition, with drifting snow. Tabolts Road was in fair to good condition. Houseville Gulf Road was in good to fair condition.  Graves Road was groomed and in good to fair condition.  The French Road was in good to fair condition. From Burdicks Crossing Road, to Sweeney Road and continuing to Middle Road, to North-South Road, to Brantingham, to the Pine Tree Inn, located in the middle of Brantingham, has thin to limited snow coverage.  The recent snowfall has continued to help this area. Continuing down Partridgeville Road, towards Stillwater, passing the Coach Light Inn and Trailside Restaurant & Tavern has thin to limited snow cover all the way to the trailhead to Stillwater. From Brantingham to Stillwater was in fair condition. Heading through Boonville was in good to fair condition.  The Railroad tracks heading to Old Forge from Forestport and Woodgate were in good to fair condition.  The trails in that area are in good to fair condition as well. Continuing through Thendara and Big Moose Station, the Railroad tracks were in fair to good condition. Be alert to areas where the rails are exposed.  Ride early for the best conditions…

As an added note, if you're planning a trip to the area this weekend, the area should still be in good shape.  The rain that's in the forecast is expected to bring a quarter to a half an inch of precipitation, which won't effect the conditions much.  Only the paved roads may be effected, however there's snow in the forecast for Friday, which will help recover the conditions.  Hopefully the clubs will be out before the rain falls.  That will be a determining factor.

Scattered snow is expected on Wednesday, with a temperature high in the mid 30's.  There's a chance of rain on Thursday into Friday, with a temperature high in the mid 40.  There's a chance of snow on Saturday and Sunday.  Don't fear the end of the week's forecast, as a lot can happen between now and then.  We'll see what develops.

Continuing through Barrows Performance and up McGoldrick Truck Trail, to the intersection of Number 9 Trail, was groomed and in very good condition.  Use McGoldrick, as it leads you right to the trail heading to the Southern part of the Hill or the Sportsman’s, rather than having to ride North Road, which is a back breaker.  Plumber Road, to Smith Road was in fair to good condition. Tug Hill -- Early Bird Gets The Better Trails...
By Magnum

Monday, 16 February 2009, at 2:54 a.m.
The temperature is approximately 3 F degrees. Sunday was mostly sunny, with a temperature high in the lower 20's.  There’s approximately 30 to 40 inches of snow on the Hill. The lower elevation areas, like Turin and Boonville have 6 to 24+ inches. Brantingham has approximately 6 to 18+ inches of snow on the ground.  These are estimated snow depths on average. Traffic in the area was busy, but low for a holiday weekend.

Although traffic on the Hill was low for a holiday weekend, there were still a lot of snowmobiles running the trails and by the afternoon, they were pretty bumpy.  Although all the clubs were out, nice and late I might add (Thankfully), 90% of them have rollers.  For some riders or if your riding and older sled or if you don't hit the trails until later in the day, the trails may feel less than good to fair condition, however all the clubs were out and compared to what the trails were like during the day, they're in pretty good shape.  Tonight, the trails are hard packed. The trail system from West Leyden, North to the Hill was groomed and in mostly good condition. Tug Hill - Worst Ride Of The Season
By Magnum

Friday, 13 February 2009, at 4:41 a.m.
The temperature is approximately 19 F degrees. Rain fell on the area into the late morning, before turning over to flurries, with a temperature high in the mid 30's.  By late afternoon the snow was falling heavier, however some of the lower elevation areas like Boonville was still receiving light rain.  By evening snow was falling on the lower elevation areas, with 1 to 3 inches of new snow and 3 to 5 inches of new accumulation on the higher elevation areas.  There’s approximately 30 to 40 inches of snow on the Hill. The lower elevation areas, like Turin and Boonville have 8 to 24+ inches. Brantingham has approximately 6 to 18+ inches of snow on the ground.  These are estimated snow depths on average. Traffic in the area picked up on Thursday, especially into the evening.

Unfortunately, only Barnes Corners Sno Pals were the only club out last night and the area trail are very bumpy and moguled.  It's pretty sad that no clubs, except one, were out right after unfavorable weather and right before one of the busiest weekends of the season.  So even if the clubs go out tonight, they'll never have a chance to set as most riders roll into town and hit the trails...  Tonight, the trails are hard packed, with 3 to 5 inches of new snow. The trail system from West Leyden, North to the Hill was in good to fair condition. Continuing through Barrows Performance and up McGoldrick Truck Trail, to the intersection of Number 9 Trail, was in good to fair condition.  Use McGoldrick, as it leads you right to the trail heading to the Southern part of the Hill or the Sportsman’s, rather than having to ride Michigan Mills Road.  Plumber Road, to Smith Road was in fair to good condition. Heading off the Hill, down to Gomer Hill Road, near the Towpath Inn, in Turin, was in good to fair condition.  Back to the top of the Hill… Number 9 trail to Tabolts corners was very bumpy and in fair to bad condition, with large rollers and moguls. Carpenter Road to Timberview was in fair to good condition. Heading South of Timberview, crossing Route 26, heading towards Brantingham was in fair to good condition. Be alert through this area, especially at night, as the trail marking is hard to see. The Railroad Bed, heading to the Sportsmans was narrow and in good to fair condition. Tabolts Road was in fair condition. Houseville Gulf Road was in fair condition.  Graves Road was in fair to good condition.  The French Road was in fair to good condition. Leonards Lane Road was in fair to good condition.  Continuing on Centerville Road to Flat Rock Inn, was in fair condition. Flat Rock Road to the intersection of Parker & Olin Road was very bumpy and in fair condition. Parker Road to the Montague Inn was groomed and in very good condition. Olin Road to the Tug Hill Inn was groomed and in very good condition. On the lower elevation areas, heading to the drive in theater, from Marino’s Pizza, in Lyons Fall/Turin, was in fair condition. Be alert to pooling water.  Continuing to the drive-in theater and the RVI Restaurant, near Rt. 12, was in fair condition, with pooling water. From Burdicks Crossing Road, to Sweeney Road and continuing to Middle Road, to North-South Road, to Brantingham, to the Pine Tree Inn, located in the middle of Brantingham, has thin to no snow coverage. Continuing down Partridgeville Road, towards Stillwater, passing the Coach Light Inn and Trailside Restaurant & Tavern has thin to limited snow cover all the way to the trailhead to Stillwater. From Brantingham to Stillwater was in fair condition. Heading through Boonville was in good to fair condition, with a few bare spots, however very easy to get around. The Railroad tracks heading to Old Forge from Forestport and Woodgate were in good to fair condition.  The trails in that area are in good to fair condition as well. Continuing through Thendara and Big Moose Station, the Railroad tracks were in good to fair condition. Be alert to areas where the rails are exposed.  Ride early for the best conditions…

As an added note, if you're looking for something a little different while in the area, check out the Soda Fountain Restaurant in Remsen, which is South of Boonville.  It's a 50's style restaurant with great atmosphere and food.  Check out the link below.  I've also added a link to I.R.O.C. & Beyond Snowmobile Show.  I was invited into the studio this week as a guest.  Tune into the interview as well as other great topics about our sport.  In addition, you'll see a lot of brown snow in the day photos of the trails.  That. sand, pollen and dirt that had settled on the surface of the the trails and snow banks because of the recent thaw.  At the time of this report it's all been covered with the recent snow fall.  The conditions are better now.  That's why I waited to evening for the photos, so it gives you the most accurate idea of the conditions...

Friday is expected to be clear, with the temperature highs in the lower 20's.  Saturday through President's weekend is expected to be clear, with a temperature high in the mid 20's.  Tuesday is expected to be clear as well.  We'll see what develops.

Tug Hill - Zero Visibility
By Magnum

Thursday, 12 February 2009, at 12:33 a.m.
The temperature is approximately 42 F degrees. Around mid afternoon on Wednesday, the rain started to fall and continued through early evening, with a temperature high in the mid 40's and the upper 40's on the lower elevation areas.  At the time of this report, the rain was coming down pretty steady and thick fog was covering the area.  There’s approximately 30 to 40 inches of snow on the Hill. The lower elevation areas, like Turin and Boonville have 12 to 28+ inches. Brantingham has approximately 6 to 18+ inches of snow on the ground.  These are estimated snow depths on average. Traffic in the area was a ghost town on Wednesday.

Currently the snow is well saturated and there's pooling water on the trails.  Tonight, I didn't ride because of the rain and frankly any rider that isn't living under a rock knew it was going to rain through early Friday morning and there isn't going to be much riding until possibly Thursday evening.  The good news is there's still plenty of snow on the higher elevation areas and the majority of the lower elevation areas, North of Alder Creek, still have snow.  Alder Creek is just South of Boonville.  Gusting winds over 30 mph and snow is in the forecast by Thursday afternoon, with the temperatures expected to drop to the mid 20's by early evening.  3 to 6 inches of fresh snow are expected to fall by Friday.  As the temperature drops, be alert to icy conditions.

The rain is expected continue into Thursday morning, before turning over to snow by early afternoon, with a temperature high in the upper 20's.   By Thursday evening the temperatures are expected to fall a little more to the lower to mid 20's and the snow is forecasted to continue with 2 to 6 inches of fresh accumulation.  Friday is expected to be clear, with the temperature highs in the mid 20's.  Saturday through President's weekend is expected to be clear, with a temperature high in the mid 20's.  We'll see what develops.
