Tug Hill --
Sun & Warm Temps... Ride Early...
By Magnum
Friday, 05 March 2010, at 2:11 a.m.
The
temperature is approximately 28 degrees.
It was mostly overcast on Thursday, with a temperature high
in the lower 30's.
There's approximately 24 to 36+ inches of snow on the
ground, on the Hill. Areas like Brantingham and Turin
have approximately 8 to 20+ inches of snow on the ground.
A note about the snow depths... Driving through the
area, you'll find places that have 2 feet and within a 100
yards, there's half of that amount. The snow banks
along the road is over 3 feet high (I don't count the snow
banks). So I try and give an average of what's on the
ground in each area. In addition, although it's great
that we're still have snow, keep in mind that the
temperatures have been hovering right above freezing, so the
trails aren't going to hold up as long. Get out early
for the best conditions. Traffic in the area was low
on Wednesday...
Tonight, the trails are hard packed, with loose snow on
top. The trail system from West Leyden, North to the Hill
was in fair to good condition. Continuing through
Barrows Performance and up McGoldrick Truck Trail, to the
intersection of Number 9 Trail, was in fair to good
condition. Southern Tug Hill's club didm't groom.
Plumber Road, past Whiskey Jack's, to Smith Road was in good
to fair condition. Number 9 trail to Tabolts corners
was in good to fair condition with some rollers.
Carpenter Road to Timberview was in good to fair condition.
The Railroad Bed, heading to the Sportsmans was in good to
fair condition. Tabolts Road was in good to fair
condition. Houseville Gulf Road was in fair condition.
Graves Road was in good condition (Because it's plowed).
Don't power into the turns, as there's not a lot of
traction. The French Road was groomed and in good to
fair condition. Leonards Lane Road was groomed and in good
to fair condition. Continuing on Centerville Road to
Flat Rock Inn, was groomed and in good to fair condition.
Flat Rock Road to the intersection of Parker & Olin Road was
groomed and in good to fair condition. Parker Road to
the Montague Inn was in good to fair condition. Olin Road to
the Tug Hill Inn was in good to fair condition. On the
lower elevation areas, heading to the drive in theater, from
Marino’s Pizza, in Lyons Fall/Turin still has some cover and
was in fair condition, with thin to bare and wet spots. The
lower elevation areas need more snow. It's important
to stay on the trail in theses areas. Continuing to
the drive-in theater and the RVI Restaurant, near Rt. 12,
was in fair condition, with thin to bare and wet spots. From
Burdicks Crossing Road, to Sweeney Road and continuing to
Middle Road is thin to bare along the roads. If your
sled has overheating issues, be alert in this area.
Continuing to North-South Road, to Brantingham, to the Pine
Tree Inn, located in the middle of Brantingham, has thin to
bare snow coverage along the roads as well, but improves as
you get closer to the Pine Tree. Continuing down
Partridgeville Road, towards Stillwater, passing the Coach
Light Inn and Trailside Restaurant & Tavern has thin to bare
snow cover all the way to the trailhead to Stillwater.
Most riders are riding on the snow banks. From
Brantingham to Stillwater was in good to fair condition,
with thin to bare and wet spots. Heading through Boonville
was in fair to good condition, with thin to bare and wet
spots. The Railroad tracks heading to Old Forge from
Forestport and Woodgate were in good to fair condition. with
thin to bare and wet spots. Be alert to areas where
the rails are exposed. Continuing through Thendara and
Big Moose Station, the Railroad tracks are in fair to good
condition. Be alert to areas where the rails are exposed.
Ride early for the best conditions.
When riding the area, be alert to riding in fields, where
stumps, rocks and debris are shielded by snow. Open fields
are full of hidden surprises. Just stay on the marked trails
and you'll be fine. Be alert to riding on lakes and
reservoirs. Always talk to locals before riding on what
appears to be frozen water. Ride At Your Own Risk.
Friday
through Sunday is expected to be clear, with a temperature
high in the lower to mid 30's.
There's a chance
of rain on Monday, with a temperature high in the mid 30's.
Fortunately it looks like the snow may fall by Monday
night and continue through Thursday. We'll see what
develops.

Not What You'd Think...
By Magnum
Saturday, 26 February 2010, at 3:52 a.m.
The
temperature is approximately 30 degrees.
It was mostly overcast on Friday, with the sun shining
periodically and a temperature high in the lower 40's on the
lower elevation and in the mid 30's on the Hill. Snow
flurries fell on the area as well, with approximately 4 to 6 inches of new snow in the last 24 hours.
We're not getting the crazy snow accumulations like in the
Southern part of the state or even 40 miles South, near
Utica that received 2 feet.
There's approximately 28 to 36+ inches of snow on the ground,
on the Hill. Areas like Brantingham and Turin have
approximately 12 to 20+ inches of snow on the ground.
A note about the snow depths... Driving through the
area, you'll find places that have 2 feet and within a 100
yards, there's half of that amount. The snow banks
along the road is over 3 feet high (I don't count the snow
banks). So I try and give
an average of what's on the ground in each area. In
addition, although it's great that we're getting all this
snow, keep in mind that the temperatures have been hovering
right above freezing, so the trails aren't going to hold up
as long. They were slushy and mushy on the lower
elevation areas, through Friday day. Get out early for the best conditions. Traffic in the area
was low on Friday...
Unfortunately only one club was out last night. That
makes two nights in a row for some clubs like Southern Tug
Hill's. I understand that it was warm on Friday and
some clubs have gotten into the bad habbit of leaving the
groomer barn Now how can I make such a claim??
Because the Turin Ridge Riders' Club, which is located in
one of the lowest elevation areas on the Hill was one of the
ONLY clubs the were out. The snow was not balling and
the trail smoothed out superbly!!! WHY?!?! Why
is it in 2010 the Hill can't get groomed on a Friday night??
Now that many areas have snow, Tug Hill needs to be
competitive to bring riders in. Why would ANYONE spend
their hard earned money to visit an area with bumpy trails??
The ONLY thing keeping Tug Hill from growing into its full
potential, are the clubs. When the trails are bumpy
riders go home... The ONLY thing a rider wants is
smooth trails. Why is it that only one or two clubs
get it??
Tonight, the trails are hard packed, with loose snow on top. The
trail system from West Leyden, North to the Hill was bumpy
and in in fair condition. Continuing through Barrows Performance
and up McGoldrick Truck Trail, to the intersection of Number
9 Trail, was bumpy and in fair to good condition. Plumber
Road, past Whiskey Jack's, to Smith Road was groomed and in
good condition.
Helmets off to the Turin Ridge Riders' for not only being
one of the only clubs that groomed, but for also covering
your fellow club, the Plataue Riders' Club's trails. Number 9 trail
to Tabolts corners was groomed and in mostly good condition
with some rollers. Carpenter Road to Timberview was in
good to fair condition. The Railroad Bed, heading to the Sportsmans
was bumpy and in fair condition. Tabolts Road was
groomed and
in mostly good condition. Houseville Gulf Road was
in fair condition. Graves Road was in good condition (Because it's plowed). Don't
power into the turns, as there's not a lot of traction.
The French Road was in fair to good condition. Leonards Lane
Road was bumpy and in fair to good condition. Continuing on
Centerville Road to Flat Rock Inn, was in fair to good
condition. Flat Rock Road to the intersection of
Parker & Olin Road was bumpy and in fair to good condition. Parker Road to the Montague Inn was
in good to fair condition. Olin Road to the Tug Hill Inn was
in good to fair condition. On the lower elevation
areas, heading to the drive in theater, from Marino’s Pizza,
in Lyons Fall/Turin is mostly covered and was in fair to
good condition, with
thin to bare and wet spots. The lower elevation areas
were slushy on Friday. The
area is still passable. It's important to stay on the trail in theses
areas.
Continuing to the drive-in theater and the RVI Restaurant,
near Rt. 12, was in fair condition, with thin to bare and
wet spots. From Burdicks
Crossing Road, to Sweeney Road and continuing to Middle
Road is thin to bare along the roads. If your sled has
overheating issues, be alert in this area. Hopefully
with the new snow that's in the forecast as we approach the
weekend, these areas will improve. Continuing to North-South Road, to Brantingham, to the Pine Tree
Inn, located in the middle of Brantingham, has thin to bare snow coverage
along the roads as well, but improves as you get closer to
the Pine Tree. Continuing down Partridgeville Road, towards Stillwater, passing the Coach
Light Inn and Trailside Restaurant & Tavern has thin to
bare snow cover all the way to the trailhead to Stillwater.
Most riders are riding on the snow banks. From
Brantingham to Stillwater was in fair to good condition, with
thin to bare and wet
spots.
Heading through Boonville was in good to fair condition,
with thin to bare and wet spots. This area was
very slushy as well on Friday. This area is
still passable. The Railroad tracks heading to Old Forge from Forestport and
Woodgate were in good to fair condition. with thin to bare
and wet spots. Be alert to areas where the rails are exposed. Continuing

There's approximately 20 to 30 inches of snow on the ground
on the Hill.
Areas like Brantingham and Turin have approximately 5 to 10+ inches of snow on the ground.
Boonville has approximately 5 to 8+ inches of snow.
A note about the snow depths... Because of the type of
snow and how it's drifting, there are areas that have deeper
accumulation than areas that are exposed to the sun, that'll
have less snow. I try and give an average. Traffic in the area has continued to be busy through the
holiday week. There are many groups and families
on the trails, so be a little more patient, use hand signals
and stay right...
Tonight, the trails are hard packed, with loose snow on top. The
trail system from West Leyden, North to the Hill was groomed
and in good
condition. Continuing through Barrows Performance
and up McGoldrick Truck Trail, to the intersection of Number
9 Trail, was in good condition. Plumber
Road, past Whiskey Jack's, to Smith Road was in good to fair
condition.
Number 9 trail
to Tabolts corners was in mostly good to fair condition
with some rollers. Carpenter Road to Timberview was
groomed and in
good condition. The Railroad Bed, heading to the Sportsmans
was in fair to good condition. Tabolts Road was
in good to fair condition. Houseville Gulf Road was
groomed and in good
condition. Graves Road was in good condition (Because it's plowed)
with icy spots. Don't
power into the turns, as there's not a lot of traction.
The French Road was groomed and in good condition. Leonards Lane
Road was groomed and in good condition. Continuing on
Centerville Road to Flat Rock Inn, was groomed and in mostly good
condition. Flat Rock Road to the intersection of
Parker & Olin Road was groomed and in mostly good condition. Parker Road to the Montague Inn was
in good condition. Olin Road to the Tug Hill Inn was
in good to fair condition. On the lower elevation areas, heading to the drive in
theater, from Marino’s Pizza, in Lyons Fall/Turin is mostly
covered and was in fair to good condition, with icy and
thin to bare spots. The
area is still passable, but there are stretches of bare
spots. It's important to stay on the trail in theses
areas.
Continuing to the drive-in theater and the RVI Restaurant,
near Rt. 12, was in fair to good condition, with icy and
thin to bare spots. From Burdicks
Crossing Road, to Sweeney Road and continuing to Middle
Road, to North-South Road, to Brantingham, to the Pine Tree
Inn, located in the middle of Brantingham, has thin to bare snow coverage
along the roads. If your sled tends to overheat, you
may have an issue getting to Brantingham along the roads. Continuing down Partridgeville Road, towards Stillwater, passing the Coach
Light Inn and Trailside Restaurant & Tavern has thin to
bare snow cover all the way to the trailhead to Stillwater. From
Brantingham to Stillwater was in good to fair condition, with
thin to bare and icy
spots.
Heading through Boonville was in good to fair condition,
with thin to bare and icy spots. This area is
still passable. The Railroad tracks heading to Old Forge from Forestport and
Woodgate were in fair to good condition. with bare spots and icy
areas. Mostly on the turns. Be alert to areas where the rails are exposed. Continuing
through Thendara and Big Moose Station, the Railroad tracks
are in fair to good condition. Be
alert to areas where the rails are exposed. Ride early
for the best conditions.
Snow is expected
to fall Saturday and continue through the weekend,
with a temperature high in the upper 20's and less than an
inch of new snow each day. Monday day is expected to
be clear. The snow is expected to return by Monday
night and continue through Thursday. We'll see
what develops.

Tug Hill --
Direct Hit!!!
By Magnum
Friday, 29 January 2010, at 1:46 a.m.
The
temperature is approximately -1 degrees.
Snow fell on the area for most of the day on Thursday, with a temperature high in the
upper teens, and approximately 6 to 8 inches of new
accumulation. As you travel off the Hill to the lower
elevations, the accumulations were less and less. The
Turin area received closer to 3 to 5 inches and just to
miles away in Lyons Falls and Boonville received 1 to 4 inches.
There's approximately 10 to 16 inches of snow on the ground
on the Hill.
The lower areas like Brantingham and Turin have
approximately 2 to 5 inches of snow on the ground.
Boonville has approximately 1 to 5 inches of snow.
Traffic in the area picked up.
The good news is
the area received a good amount of snow, just in time for
the weekend. Not that it's bad news, but the type of
snow that's fallen, is a very fine, small type flake,
meaning it's like sugar. Why is this not the greatest
type snow?? Because it doesn't pack well. It
basically means the trails won't hold up as long to a high
amount of traffic. Many riders were scarred off
because of the sketch conditions at the beginning of the
week and may have canceled their weekend trip.
It'll be interesting to see how much traffic rolls in.
Tonight, the trails have firmed up, with loose snow on top. The
trail system from West Leyden, North to the Hill was in good condition. Be alert on the turns as
they are loose. Continuing through Barrows Performance

Fresh Snow On The Way...
By Magnum
Tuesday, 26 January 2010, at 12:04 a.m.
The
temperature is approximately 30 degrees.
A heavy rain fell on the area for most of the day on Monday, with a temperature high in the
upper 40's.
There's approximately 6 to 12 inches of snow on the ground.
The lower areas like Brantingham and Turin have
approximately scattered to 5 inches of snow on the ground.
Boonville has approximately scattered to 5 inches of snow.
Traffic was at it's lowest, as no one was riding.
Tonight, the trails are soft and saturated.
Again, I
didn't ride this evening, due to the heavy rain, but I
wanted to keep you up to date on what's happening. Yes, at the
time of this report, the rain has subsided.
Everything is well saturated. Many of the lower
elevation areas like between the Hill and Brantingham,
has pooling water and has many bare spots. The rain
has put a pause on the lower areas. Most of the
trails on the Hill are still covered and ridable, but as the
temperatures drop, they're going to be very icy. As
bad as it all my seem, the good news is there's snow in the
forecast and it looks like we can get 6 to 12 inches of new
snow by the weekend. As the week goes on and we
approach the weekend, the temperatures are expected to drop
to the single digits.
Snow is expected to fall
on Tuesday, with 3 to 8 inches of new snow, with a
temperature high in the mid 20's. More snow is
expected from Wednesday through Saturday, with the
temperature highs in the lower 20's. The temperatures
are expected to decline as we approach the weekend. We'll see
what develops.

Monday, 25 January 2010, at 1:15 a.m.
The

Sunday was mostly overcast, with a temperature high in the

By evening the rain started to fall. There's
approximately 12 to 18 inches of snow on the ground.
The lower areas like Brantingham and Turin have
approximately 4 to 8 inches of snow on the ground.
Boonville has approximately 4 to 8+ inches of snow.
Traffic in the area was low on Sunday.
Tonight, the trails are soft and saturated. I
didn't ride this evening, due to the heavy rain, but I
wanted to update you to what's happening. Yes, at the
time of this report, a heavy rain was falling.
Everything is well saturated. Many of the lower
elevation areas like between the Hill and Brantingham,
has pooling water and has many bare spots. Most of the
trails on the Hill will be OK and survive, with the
exception of Graves Rd. Keep in mind that we've been
riding on the same snow for the last month and a half.
January is also known as a thaw month, so we've been lucky
to make it this far. That's the positive spin...
The good news is by Monday evening, the rain is expected to
turn over to snow and continue through next weekend, with
the temperature highs remaining well below freezing.
How much of the white stuff we'll get is the big question...
Rain is
expected to
fall through
Monday, with a temperature high in the lower 40's. By Monday
night the rain is expected to turn over to snow. The
snow is expected to fall everyday through Saturday, with the
temperature highs in the mid 20's. We'll see

Saturday, 16 January 2010, at 3:51 a.m.

There's approximately 19 to 26 inches of snow on the ground.

January is usually known as a thaw month and in the past, no
matter how good the season starts, somehow MLK weekend seems
to always warm up. Many clubs tend not to groom and
the trails tend to be marginal. This season started as
the same, however the temperatures dropped below freezing by
early evening and just about every club was out. The
Hills is in great condition!!

Round 1,
No Freezing Rain... Yet!
By Magnum
Friday, 15 January 2010, at 3:08 a.m.
The
temperature is approximately 35 degrees.
Thursday was mostly overcast, with the sun showing its face
at times and a temperature high in the lower 20's. There's
approximately 19 to 30 inches of snow on the ground.
The lower areas like Brantingham and Turin have over a foot.
Boonville has approximately 8 to 14+ inches of snow.
Traffic in the area has started to pick up and was busy
during the day.
Tonight, the trails are loosening up due to the warmer
temperatures. At the time of this report, a very light
rain or mist was falling on the area.
The trail system from West Leyden, North to the Hill was in
good to fair condition. Continuing through Barrows Performance
and up McGoldrick Truck Trail, to the intersection of Number
9 Trail, was in good to fair condition. Be alert on the
turns and
hills as they are bumpy.
Unfortunately,
Southern Tug Hill's Club was the ONLY club not to groom last
night. Plumber Road, past
Whiskey Jack's, to Smith Road was in good to fair
condition. Heading off the Hill, down to Gomer Hill Road,

French Road was groomed and in good condition. Leonards Lane Road was groomed and in good condition.
Continuing on Centerville Road to Flat Rock Inn, was groomed
and in good condition. Flat Rock Road to the
intersection of Rowsam Road was in excellent condition.
Be alert as the groomers banked/bermed the snow to Rowsam
Road as well, creating an unsafe condition. I guess
they thought it's the Daytona Speedway. Flat Rock Road
is the main corridor trail and it should be flat.
Continuing on Flat Rock Road to the intersection of Parker & Olin Road was groomed and in good
condition. Parker Road to the Montague Inn was
groomed and in good condition. Olin Road to the Tug Hill Inn was
groomed and in good condition. On the lower elevation areas,

I heard a few sled went into the Stillwater reservoir.
I called the Lewis Co. Sheriff's department to confirm this,
however there was no report of it happening. Either
way, it's still a little early to ride on them and with the
warmer temperatures from last week and a layer of snow
slowing the process, be alert to riding on lakes and

mean it's safe.

Many of you are avid listeners of the Snowmobile show IROC &
Beyond with Lee Hinkleman. I was a guest on
this weeks episode. It's a very informative show, with
information about our sport and the area we ride. Lee
many times does interviews along the trails with riders on
the Tug Hill & Old Forge areas. I highly recommend
checking it out and listening to the weekly show. Use
the link below to check it out...
Snow
showers are expected on Sunday, with a
temperature high in the single digits and 2 to 6 inches of
new snow. More snow is expected on Monday, with a
temperature high in the mid teens and 1 to 3 inches of
accumulation. Snow showers are
in the forecast through Friday, with the temperature highs in the
lower 20's and upper teens.
We'll see what develops.

Tug Hill --
Not A Good Way To Start The New Year...
By Magnum
Saturday, 2 January 2010, at 3:50 a.m.
The
temperature is approximately 22 degrees.
The snow has been falling, heavy at times for the last 24
hours, with 2 to 4 inches of new snow and a
temperature high in the mid 30's. There's
approximately 14 to 22 inches of snow on the ground.
The lower areas like Brantingham and Turin have close to a
foot. Boonville has
approximately 6 to 10+ inches of snow. Traffic in
the area was busy, but light for a weekend, let alone a
holiday weekend.
Clubs like
Southern Tug Hill didn't touch one of their trails on
Thursday night into Friday and their trails were a bumpy
mess. Many riders heading South of the Hill ended up
turning around and avoiding that area. Unfortunately
it effected many of the businesses in that area.
Fortunately Valley Snow travelers were grooming, so their
trails weren't too bad Friday day, although most of the
trails on the Hill were bumpy when I came through to meet up
with friends for a ride, near the Montague area.
As I returned to Barrows Performance around 2:30 am,
Saturday morning, the trails were pretty bumpy.
Although clubs like Valley Snow Travelers had been out
grooming, much of their trails were still bumpy.
Running the drags over 1 to 2 foot mogals is not enough to
knock the bumps down and the groomers need to use the front
blade. That's what it's there for. So although
you'll see in tonight's trail report that a clubs trails
have been groomed, they're still in poor condition, which is
a shame, heading into a holiday weekend. I've gotten a
lot of Emails asking about Graves Road. Because an
individual has taken a full time residence in that area and
no one from the snowmobile club or the town ever had the
forethought to designate Graves Road as a minimum
maintenance road, the town is forced to plow it. Not
down to the dirt, but it won't take much for the road to go
bare. Yup that's right, one of the most important
trails on the Hill has been jeopardized because of one
person. So now when the weather gets sketchy or
towards the end of the season when it gets warm, the entire
trail system will be cut off, allowing traffic to move from
the Northern end of the Hill to the lower end. It's
pretty crazy!!
Tonight, the trails are hard packed, with a couple inches of
loose snow on top. The trail system from West Leyden, North
to the Hill was groomed and in good to fair condition. Be alert to
a couple thin areas. Continuing through
Barrows Performance and up McGoldrick Truck Trail, to the
intersection of Number 9 Trail, was groomed and in mostly good condition.
Be alert on the turns, as they're bumpy. Plumber Road, to Smith Road was
in good to fair condition. Heading off the Hill, down to Gomer Hill Road,
near the Towpath Inn, in Turin, was in good to fair condition. Back
to the top of the Hill… Number 9 trail to Tabolts corners
was groomed and in fair to good condition, with many bumpy
areas and rollers. Carpenter Road to
Timberview was in good to fair condition. Heading South
of Timberview, crossing Route 26, heading towards
Brantingham was in good to fair condition. The
Railroad Bed, heading to the Sportsmans was in
fair to good condition. Tabolts Road was groomed and in fair
condition. Houseville Gulf Road was groomed and in good
to fair condition. Graves Road was in mostly good condition
(Because it's plowed). The
French Road was groomed and in good to fair condition. Leonards Lane Road was
groomed and in good
to fair condition. Continuing on
Centerville Road to Flat Rock Inn, was groomed and in fair to
good condition. Flat Rock Road to the intersection of Parker &
Olin Road was groomed and in fair to good condition. Parker Road to the
Montague Inn was in good to fair condition. Olin Road to the
Tug Hill Inn was in fair to good condition. On the lower
elevation areas, heading to the drive in theater, from
Marino’s Pizza, in Lyons Fall/Turin, was in good to fair
condition. Continuing to the drive-in theater and the RVI
Restaurant, near Rt. 12, was in good to fair condition. From Burdicks Crossing Road, to Sweeney Road

Have A Safe New Year...

Thursday, 31 December 2009, at 12:17 a.m.
The
temperature is approximately 12 degrees.
The area had a slight setback this past weekend, with some
warmer temperatures. Fortunately the area received a
few inches of ne snow in the beginning of the week.
Wednesday was mostly clear, with a
temperature high in the lower 20's. There's
approximately 12 to 18 inches of snow on the ground.
The lower areas like Brantingham and Turin have close to a
foot. Boonville has
approximately 5 to 8 inches of snow. Traffic in
the area has picked up as New Years Eve approaches.
When the temperatures warmed up this past weekend, the
trails were pretty bumpy, then when the temperatures
dropped, the trails hardened up bumpy. Although we
received some new snow, the area could use some more to get
the trails flat again. So although there's plenty of
cover to ride, some of the trails are bumpy, even with
grooming. Tonight, the trails are hard packed. The trail system from West Leyden, North

stumps, rocks and debris are shielded by snow. Open fields
are full of hidden surprises. Just stay on the marked trails
and you'll be fine. Be alert to riding on lakes and
reservoirs. Always talk to locals before riding on what
appears to be frozen water. Ride At Your Own Risk.

Good Shape Heading Into The Weekend...
By Magnum
Friday, 18 December 2009, at 3:06 a.m.
The
temperature is approximately -12 degrees.
In the past week, the area has received a few more inches of
snow, on top of the 3 feet that was already on the ground,
although we've also received a little bit of rain, which has
settled the snow down to 18 to 24 inches. Fortunately
the temperatures have been well below freezing, so we've
established a great base. Thursday was mostly clear, with a
temperature high in the single digits. Although there
have been snowmobilers hitting the area trails, traffic in
the area has been low. This along with some grooming
and extremely cold temperatures, have been a formula for
good trail conditions.
Tonight, the trails are hard packed, with 2 to 4 inches of
loose snow on top. The trail system from West Leyden, North
to the Hill was in good to fair condition. Be alert to
a couple thin areas with water. Continuing through
Barrows Performance and up McGoldrick Truck Trail, to the
intersection of Number 9 Trail, was in good to fair
condition. Plumber Road, to Smith Road was in fair
condition. Heading off the Hill, down to Gomer Hill Road,
near the Towpath Inn, in Turin, was in fair condition. Back
to the top of the Hill… Number 9 trail to Tabolts corners
was groomed and in good condition. Carpenter Road to
Timberview was groomed and in good condition. Heading South
of Timberview, crossing Route 26, heading towards
Brantingham was groomed and in good condition. The
Railroad Bed, heading to the Sportsmans was groomed and in
good condition. Tabolts Road was groomed and in good
condition. Houseville Gulf Road was in fair to good
condition. Graves Road was in fair to good condition. The
French Road was in fair to good condition. Leonards Lane
Road was in fair to good condition. Continuing on
Centerville Road to Flat Rock Inn, was in good to fair
condition. Flat Rock Road to the intersection of Parker &

The Groomers Are Rolling...
By Magnum
Sunday, 13 December 2009, at 12:11 a.m.
The
temperature is approximately 20 degrees, with a temperature
high in the mid 20's. There's approximately 24 to 30 inches
of snow on the lower level areas like Lowville and Turin. Boonville
has approximately 4 to 8 inches on the ground. Traffic
in the area was low on Saturday. Although there were
some areas that were worn down to the ground, the trails
didn't take too much of a beating. There was a lot of
powder an the trails were narrow, since the groomers weren't
out yet. By Saturday evening, all the clubs were out
on the trail. although Southern Tug Hill club was out,
they didn't do the upper portion of their trails. This
may get done by Sunday. Be alert to
open fields as there may be hidden dangers. Be sure to
stay on the trails. Also avoid
lakes and reservoirs, as they haven't frozen over yet.
There's a
chance of rain on Sunday, with a temperature high in the
lower 30's. There's a possible mix of snow and rain in the
forecast on Monday and Tuesday, with a temperature high in
the lower 30's.
There's a chance of snow Wednesday into Thursday, with a
temperature high in the lower teens. Friday and
Saturday is expected to be clear, with a temperature high in
the lower teens.

Watch What You Wish For...
By Magnum
Saturday, 12 December 2009, at 1:56 a.m.
The
temperature is approximately 14 degrees, with a temperature
high in the lower 20's. From Thursday night into
Friday morning, the area has been hammered with snow.
Schools and area businesses were closed and even the main
drag through the area, Route 12 was covered with snow and
had over a foot of snow in most areas. The area was a
mess. Now as you head South, the snow wasn't very
heavy. Traveling through Boonville, you could actually
see the road. Continuing South, past Alder Creek,
there wasn't much new snow. Once you got down to
Barneveld or Utica, the sun was shinning and the roads were
clear. The lake effect snow bands were only hitting
the Tug Hill area and North. The area received an additional
12 to 24 inches
of snow, through the day and into
the evening on Friday. There's been whiteout conditions
for most of the day. There's approximately 12 to
24 inches on the lower level areas like Lowville and Turin. Boonville
has approximately 4 to 6 inches on the ground. I
haven't seen or heard of any clubs grooming as of yet.
The theory is to let the sleds pound the snow, packing it
down and taking the air out of it. Be alert to
open fields as there may be hidden dangers. Also avoid
lakes and reservoirs, as they haven't frozen over yet.
The snow is
expected to fall through Saturday, with 1
to 2 inches of additional snow and a temperature high in the
lower 20's. The wind is expected
to be blowing, so expect high snow drifts. There's a
chance of rain on Sunday, with a temperature high in the
lower 30's. Snow is in the
forecast all through next week, with freezing temperatures.
Monday may bring some rain, which wouldn't be a bad thing as
the snow that's falling now is very dry and like sugar.
It's not a good packing snow.

Rock N Roll...
By Magnum
Friday, 11 December 2009, at 12:46 a.m.
The
temperature is approximately 12 degrees, with a temperature
high of 26 degrees. The wind has been gusting well
over 40 mph causing the snow to drift. The area received an additional
4 to 6 inches
of a small flake, dry type snow, through the day and into
the evening on Thursday. There's been whiteout conditions
for most of the day. There's approximately 3 to
5 inches on the lower level areas like Lowville, Turin and
Boonville. There were sleds running the trails, but
without a base, you're hitting rocks.
Heavy snow is expected on Friday with the temperature high
in the mid 20's and a low in the upper teens and
approximately 8 to 14 inches of new snow. The snow is
expected to fall through Saturday, with 8
to 12 inches of additional snow. The wind is expected
to be blowing, so expect high snow drifts. Snow is expected to fall through Saturday morning, before
becoming clear, with a temperature high in the lower 20's
and a low in the lower to mid teens. Snow is in the
forecast all through next week, with freezing temperatures.
Monday may bring some rain, which wouldn't be a bad thing as
the snow that's falling now is very dry and like sugar.
It's not a good packing snow.
Although it took over 8 hours to get the Timberview Cam back
online, it's up and running... It took a conference
call between the internet provider and the manufacturer of
the camera system to make it happen, but I'm happy to say
it's finally online. More Cams will be coming online
as the weeks progress...

The Snow Dance Is Working...
By Magnum
Thursday, 10 December 2009, at 1:38 a.m.
The
temperature is approximately 27 degrees, with a temperature
high of 37 degrees. The wind has been gusting well
over 40 mph causing the snow to drift. Most of the
ground is covered, however the wind has cased some bare
spots. The area received an additional 1 to 2 inches
of a small flake, dry type snow, Tuesday into Wednesday. By
late afternoon Wednesday, the rain was falling and the snow
on the ground was well saturated. There's approximately 1 to
3 inches on the lower level areas like Lowville, Turin and
Boonville. The higher elevation areas have a couple
inches more with 3 to 5 inches. Some of you may have
seen on the bucket loader on the Flat Rock cam. Some
of the drifts were pretty deep an a few feet high.
I know from your Emails many of you are still on the fence
about coming up this weekend... Some have mentioned
that the area is expected to receive 3 feet of new
accumulation. I haven't seen anything of that
magnitude. That is the crazy thing about the area...
Depending how a system passes through the area or if it
stalls right on top of us, we could get pounded.
That's why I'd never tell someone to not come to the area.
All I do is give you the most information so you can make
the decision yourself. Everyone has different riding
styles and some don't care what the conditions are. A
bad day on the trails, still beats a good day at work!!
The good news is the forecast is calling for heavy snow from
now through Friday, with a foot plus of new accumulation.
There will definitely enough snow to take a ride, but keep
in mind there'll be no base and if the traffic is heavy, the
conditions won't last. So plan to hit the trails
early. Avoid the lakes and reservoirs for now.
Heavy snow is expected on Thursday with the temperature high
in the mid 20's and a low in the upper teens and
approximately 4 to 8 inches of new snow. The snow is
expected to fall through Thursday night into Friday, with 8
to 12 inches of additional snow. The wind is expected
to be blowing, so expect high snow drifts. More snow
is expected Friday, heavy at times, with a temperature high
in the lower 20's and a low in the mid to upper teens.
Snow is expected to fall through Saturday morning, before
becoming clear, with a temperature high in the lower 20's
and a low in the lower to mid teens. Snow is in the
forecast all through next week, with freezing temperatures.
Finally, I'd like to take a moment and thank all of you that
took the time out of their busy lives to send a message
offering their condolences about my father's passing...
With over 20 years of public service as a Councilman and
Mayor, one of the greatest gifts passed down to me from my
father was the value of being passionate about things you
believe in, hard work and doing for others. I'd like
to think his legacy lives on...

Start The Snow Dance...
By Magnum
Monday, 07 December 2009, at 12:21 a.m.
The
majority of the area trails open today. There's an
extra week of hunting season in some areas, so next Saturday
all snowmobile trails will be open. Mother
Nature has been nappining and unfortunately the season is
getting a late start due to the lack of snow. It's
been relatively warm, with the temperatures in the 40's for
the last month. Even if the snow fell, it wouldn't be
good as the ground need a chance to freeze.
Fortunately the temperatures have dropped over the last few
days. The area received an inch or two on Sunday and
although it's not even close enough to ride, hopefully it'll
bee a good omen for the upcoming season. There
is snow in the forecast every day this coming week.
Although there is the process of forming a base, hopefully
the temperatures will stay low and the snow will fall fast
and furiously.
It's been actually pretty quite in the area. As with
every season, there's been some trail changes. There
are some new businesses and advertisers as well.
Unfortunately the area has lost some businesses as well.
The Redfield Hotel burned down. Barrows Performance
also had a fire and lost their house. Luckily thier
business was not effected. They're open now and
they'll be rock'n and rolling for the upcoming season.
The Barrows Live Cam has been back on for the last few
weeks. I got the Flat Rock Live Cam updated with a new
camera system yesterday (Sunday). Shortly we'll be
moving it outside for an improved view of the area. It
may take a day or two to work out the bugs, but it's back
online. More cams will be coming back online as the
weeks progress. Unfortunately I'm a little behind for
the season due to my father recently passing away.
It's caused me to be out of town for a period of time, but
I'm back and gearing up for the new season. Stay
positive and we'll be riding shortly...

Tug Hill --
Welcome
Back To An Anniversary Year...
By Magnum
Wednesday, 09 September 2009, at 12:01 a.m.
Welcome
back boys and girls! It’s that time again, as the
temperatures start to drop. Although this will go down as
one of the more mild and wet Summers on record. The Summers
seem to go pretty fast and it feels like we just put the
sleds away for the season. With the first issue of
snowmobile magazines out, the grass drag circuits heating up
and the Big East Snowmobile Show just a month away, you can
just about smell the two stoke exhaust in the air. Within
the next couple of weeks the area will probably see its
first frost and by the end of October we’ll probably see the
fist of the white stuff falling. The last two seasons,
we’ve had snow for Halloween and with all the moisture the
area’s seen over the past few months, hopefully it’ll
translate into another good snowfall season. Because of the
lower traffic and most of the area clubs doing a great job
maintaining the trails, it was one of the better seasons for
great trail conditions.
As a matter
of fact, this will be the 10th year, an
anniversary year, for AbsoluteSnowmobile. Talk about time
flying by!! It’s incredibly humbling that you’ve supported
the site over the years… Although the site has changed, the
core foundation of it hasn’t, offering the most reliable
area conditions. Thanks to you all, it has remained the
highest ranked site in the area and one of the highest
ranked sites in the country. Since AbsoluteSnowmobile was
created, a little over 9 years ago, it’s received over 2
billion visits. That’s insane!! I thank not only the
viewers, but all the sponsors over the years that have come
back on year after year and supported the site. Even the
past few seasons, with a bad economy and their limited
budgets, I greatly appreciated your support. There’s a link
below that’ll tell the story of how AbsoluteSnowmobile
started. I know many of you were riding the area for many
years before the site started and even before I was riding
the area. You have even a greater appreciation of how far
the area has come. It’s amazing to look back and reflect on
even the past 10 years when the clubs didn’t know if they
were going to be able to secure insurance and every year
there was drama if the trails would even open. With the age
of the Internet, snowmobile clubs are under a higher
scrutiny about maintaining the trails and clubs that
wouldn’t groom weren’t able to hide. The Internet itself
has been one of the driving forces behind the areas growth
and change. Snowmobile technology has improved by leaps
and bounds. Most importantly, have been the suspensions.
Yes, the current designs do look mean and fast, but the
technology just over the past five years has been amazing.
It’s hard to fathom what will come out over the next five
years, but I’m sure we’re all drooling with anticipation.
That’s where
the vintage sled shows help reflect how far the technology
and the sport has come. I never get tired of going to
them. Speaking of which, there's the
Hudon's Sled Salvage 3rd Annual
Vintage Snowmobile Show & Swap Meet, on October 10th,
from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 8187 State Route
12, Barneveld, NY.
315-896-4357,
Registration from 8 – 10 Gates open at 8, Trophies awarded
at 1. FREE sled corral, bring your sled and parts to sell or
trade. For more info use the link below. Hudon’s is about
15 minutes North of Utica on Rt. 12. Most of you pass it on
the way to Old Forge & Tug Hill. It’s one of the LARGEST
snowmobile salvage businesses in the world!! They sell new
parts as well, but as a snowmobile enthusiast, you’re amazed
just walking through this place. From hoods, tunnels and
clutches, to brand new sleds that have never been ridden and
parted out. They buy tractor trailers full of snowmobile
parts from all over the U.S. It’s almost a museum of parts
and accessories. The swap meet and vintage show gets better
and better every year. Be sure to check it out. Even if
you don’t make it to the show, you owe it to yourself to
check it out on your next visit to the area or check out
their site if you need parts.
Be sure to stop back, as I’ll be updating this page
regularly, keeping you up to date about what’s going on as
we approach the new season.
