Tug Hill -- Snirt Run Is On...
Magnum
Saturday, 12 April 2008, at 1:29 a.m.

The temperature is approximately 40 F degrees. Rain has been falling on the area through Friday, with a heavier storm passing through this evening. Hopefully we‘ll get the brunt of it now, clearing in time for Saturday. There’s minimal and scattered snow on the lower elevation areas. On the Hill, the snow is continuing to disappear as well. There have been more ATV’s running the trails, than snowmobiles.

Tonight, the trails are loose and saturated. During the day, as the temperature rises, the trails are soft and somewhat forgiving. At night, as the temperatures are still dropping near the freezing point. Keep in mind that although the trails may be sliding to fair and poor, it’s good on an ATV. The trail system from West Leyden, North to the Hill, is done for the season. South of West Leyden, towards Rome, is thin to bare and done for the season. Continuing through Barrows Performance and up McGoldrick Truck Trail, to the intersection of Number 9 Trail, was choppy, with bare/wet areas and in fair condition. Plumber Road, to Smith Road was in fair condition, with wet and bare spots. Heading off the Hill, down to Gomer Hill Road, near the Towpath Inn, in Turin, is done for the season. South of this area is mostly bare as well. Back to the top of the Hill… Number 9 trail to Tabolts corners was in fair condition, with bare and wet areas. Carpenter Road to Timberview Lodge was in fair condition, with bare and slushy/wet spots. Heading South of Timberview, crossing Route 26, heading towards Brantingham is done for the season. The Railroad Bed, heading to the Sportsmans was in fair condition, with bare/wet and icy areas. Be alert to water at Tabolts Corners. Tabolts Road was in fair to poor condition, with wet and bare spots. Tabolts Road also has rollers, moguls and ice. Houseville Gulf Road was in fair condition, with bare and wet spots. Graves Road was in fair condition, with rollers and bare/wet spots. The French Road was in fair condition, with bare/wet spots. Leonards Lane Road was in fair condition, with bare and wet spots. Centerville Road to the Flat Rock Inn was in fair to poor condition, with rollers and wet/bare areas. Most are ridable and passable. Flat Rock Road to the intersection of Parker & Olin Road was in fair to poor condition, with rollers and bare/icy/wet areas. Parker Road to the Montague Inn was in fair condition, with bare/wet spots. Olin Road to the Tug Hill Inn was in fair to poor condition, with icy areas. On the lower elevation areas, heading to the drive in theater, from The Edge Hotel or Marino’s Pizza, in Lyons Fall/Turin, is done for the year. Continuing to the drive-in theater and the RVI Restaurant, near Rt 12, is done for the year. The businesses on the lower elevation areas are open. You’ll have to trailer to the Hill or travel by vehicle to get around on the lower areas. The trails through the lower elevation areas, including Brantingham & Boonville are pretty much done for the season, although again, the businesses are open. Your best bet for finding consistent snow cover is on the Hill. Also keep in mind that as the snow melts and trails become sketchy and bare, to stay on the marked trail and respect the landowners that donate their property so we can have trails. Be alert to wildlife on the trails, as it’s easier for them to get around.

The Snirt Run this weekend is on, rain, snow or shine (See Last Report of Snirt Run Info). Flat Rock Inn is having a Chicken BBQ this Saturday starting at 12pm. Get there early, as supplies last. David Allyn (Entertainment) will be playing from 12pm - 4pm. He‘s pretty good for those that haven‘t heard him. Magnum will be at Flat Rock Inn through Saturday day as well.

As the snow starts to melt, be alert to stumps, rocks and debris, shielded by snow. Open fields are full of hidden surprises. Just stay on the marked trails and you'll be fine. Be alert to riding on lakes and reservoirs. Always talk to locals before riding on what appears to be frozen water. Ride At Your Own Risk..

There’s a chance of rain on Saturday, with a temperature high in the lower 40’s. Snow is possible by Saturday evening. There’s a chance of snow or rain on Sunday, with a temperature high in the upper 30’s. Monday day may bring snow as well. Tuesday through Friday is expected to be clear, with a temperature high in the lower 50‘s. We’ll see what develops…

Friday, 11 April 2008, at 12:06 a.m.

The temperature is approximately 36 F degrees. The last few days have been sunny, with a temperature high in the upper 40‘s. Although the temperatures are staying low, the snow continues to melt rapidly. There’s minimal and scattered snow on the lower elevation areas. On the Hill, the snow is starting to disappear as well. There have been more ATV’s running the trails, than snowmobiles.

Tonight, the trails are loose and wet. During the day, as the temperature rises, the trails are soft and somewhat forgiving. At night, as the temperatures are still dropping near the freezing point. Keep in mind that although the trails may be sliding to fair and poor, it’s good on an ATV. The trails are just about at Spring Conditions and if we get slammed with rain, the conditions will slide even faster. Tug Hill -- Not Over Yet...
Magnum
Monday, 7 April 2008, at 2:51 a.m.

The temperature is approximately 27 F degrees. The last few days have been sunny, with a temperature high in the 50‘s and near 60‘s on the lower elevation areas. There’s approximately 6 to 24 inches of snow on the Hill. The lower elevation areas, like Turin, Brantingham and Boonville have approximately scattered to 16 inches of snow on the ground.  The Hill is still 99% covered. Off The Hill, it‘s 90%+ bare. I was talking to some riders in Boonville and they looked at me like I had two heads when I said the trails are not only covered, but the conditions are still pretty good. The conditions on the Hill are currently better than Martin Luther King weekend or Valentine’s Day, not to mention the warmer temperatures, make it more comfortable to ride. Traffic in the area continues to be minimal.

Tonight, the trails are a hard packed, ice/snow, base. During the day, as the temperature rises, the trails are soft and somewhat forgiving. At night, as the temperatures are still dropping to the freezing point, most of the trails firm up as hard as a rock and icy. Keep in mind that although you’ll see me rating the trails as fair to good, they’re really in pretty good condition, ESPECIALLY for this time of year. There are a few pothole sized puddles and slushy and bare spots, however all are very passable. It’s hard to rate these trails as good, possibly misleading some of you. This is why I went out with the Rider Cam, early evening Sunday, so you can see the conditions yourself. This is an important time of the year when reliable reports are the difference between getting one good ride in or ending the season. You know Magnum wouldn‘t leave you hanging! Look at the photos and make your own decision. I’m just the messenger… The trail system from West Leyden, North to the Hill was moguled & choppy and in fair to good condition, with thin to bare spots and icy areas. South of West Leyden, towards Rome, is thin to bare and done for the season. Continuing through Barrows Performance and up McGoldrick Truck Trail, to the intersection of Number 9 Trail, was choppy and in fair to good condition, with icy areas. Plumber Road, to Smith Road was in fair to good condition. Heading off the Hill, down to Gomer Hill Road, near the Towpath Inn, in Turin, was in fair to good condition, with thin to icy areas. South of this area is mostly bare. Back to the top of the Hill… Number 9 trail to Tabolts corners was in fair to good condition, with rollers. Carpenter Road to Timberview Lodge was in fair to good condition, with thin and slushy/wet spots. Heading South of Timberview, crossing Route 26, heading towards Brantingham is done for the season. The Railroad Bed, heading to the Sportsmans was in fair to good condition, with thin and icy areas. Be alert to a waterhole at Tabolts Corners (See Rider Cam Photos). It should be marked as a hazard. If you blindly ride into it, you can get hurt. It‘s not big, as it is deep. Tabolts Road was in fair to good condition, with a long, narrow strip of slush & water, heading North. It looks like someone slammed the throttle, digging up the base/snow, then it filled with water (See Rider Cam Photos). Tabolts Road also has rollers, moguls and ice. Houseville Gulf Road was in good to fair condition, with thin spots. Graves Road was in fair to good condition, with rollers and thin spots. There are also a few water washout areas that have frozen over. The French Road was in good to fair condition. Leonards Lane Road was in good to fair condition. Centerville Road to the Flat Rock Inn was in fair to good condition, with rollers and a few wet and bare spots. All very ridable and passable. Flat Rock Road to the intersection of Parker & Olin Road was in fair to good condition, with rollers and icy/wet areas. Parker Road to the Montague Inn was in fair to good condition. Olin Road to the Tug Hill Inn was in fair to good condition, with icy areas. Overall the trails on the Hill are still covered, just be alert to icy conditions and I’d recommend taking it easy until you know what the conditions are, instead of flying down a trail and being surprised. Also keep in mind that as the snow melts and trails become sketchy and bare, to stay on the marked trail and respect the landowners that donate their property so we can have trails. Also keep in mind that Old Forge’s trails closed on April 1st, if you’re thinking of traveling through that area. You’ll also see a lot more wildlife on the trails, as it’s easier for them to get around, walking on the trails (See Rider Cam Photos - Turkeys).

As an added note… Unfortunately, many people/riders, message boards, even local businesses are reporting the trails are done for the season. I’ve even seen where one site was reporting the trails are closed as of April 1st. This can’t be further from the truth! Off the Hill, on the lower elevation areas, are mostly bare. On the Hill there are a few bare and slushy spots, however all are very passable. There are areas that begin to go bare first, as the conditions diminish. Centerville Road, just South of Flat Rock is usually the first to go. This usually split’s the Hill into riding North of Flat Rock or riding the Southern end near Barrows. Some of the turns on heavily traveled trails, usually start to go bare as well. We aren’t there yet. Take a look at the Rider Cam Photos and see the conditions for yourself. The area is still very ridable… There won’t be too many seasons you’ll be able to say we had good riding and this late in April…

There’s actually one final snowmobile event and the first ATV event, this weekend. The Annual Barnes Corners Snirt Run. Snirt is a combination of snow & dirt, for those of you that didn’t know… The event has gotten bigger and bigger every year and depending on the conditions, is often what determines what people ride. Last year the area got that last blast of snow a week or so before the event, allowing many sleds to get around, as well as ATV’s getting stuck in the soft/deep snow. FUN FOR ALL!! You can start on the Southern end of the Hill, at Barrows Performance in Constableville, between 9am & 11am Saturday morning, April 12th. Use their link below for contact info. On the North end of the Hill, you can start at Barnes Corners Sno-Pals groomer barn, located on Rt 177, just North of Tuggers. Basically, when you register, you‘ll get a card. You ride to six of the local businesses on Tug Hill, to get it marked, showing you were there. Then you return to Barnes Corners Groomer Barn or Timberview Lodge by 6pm, to be eligible for prizes. All for a $10 donation and one or two canned goods for the Lewis County food drive would be appreciated.

Flat Rock Inn is having a Chicken BBQ on the same day (Saturday) starting at 12pm. Get there early, as supplies last. David Allyn (Entertainment) will be playing from 12pm - 4pm. He‘s pretty good for those that haven‘t heard him. Magnum will be at Flat Rock Inn through Saturday day as well. As you can see, the area isn’t done yet. Close… But not yet…

When does AbsoluteSnowmobile stop?? Ha! NEVEEER!! After a long season and the groomers parked for the year, it would be easy to call it a year and take a much needed break, not to mention the continued expense and time it takes to produce the site. As the motto says “For Riders… By Riders…“ and there‘s still good riding! With the groomers parked for the season, the conditions aren‘t going to improve, making daily reports an over-kill. Every couple of days, unless there’s a drastic change in conditions, I’ll post a report, until we get to “Spring Conditions“, which is when the bare spots turn to bare areas.

What happens when the snow melts?? MUD SEASON!! As the snow melts and the ground is oversaturated, the area turns into ATV MUD HEAVEN! Many riders wear rain suits to help protect themselves from the layers of mud that seems to cake on everywhere and thing. For those that may not know that the Tug Hill area has one of the largest ATV trail networks in New York. This is going to be one of the best seasons for riding in the areas, as there are many ATV events and rally’s planned for this season. The trail system has also been greatly improved, with new trails still being added. AbsoluteATV.com is the warm weather site for the area. It’s actually the only site dedicated to riding ATV’s in the area, with the most information on how to have a great visit. There‘s a new version of AbsoluteATV that‘ll be online shortly. I‘m hoping to have it online by the last Snowmobile Trail Report. It’ll have everything you need to know about riding the area, as well as ATV Events.

Monday day is expected to be clear, with a temperature high in the mid 50’s. Monday night may bring rain, with a temperature low in the mid 30’s. Tuesday through Wednesday day is expected to be clear, with a temperature high in the mid 50’s. There‘s a chance of rain on Wednesday evening. Thursday day is expected to be clear, with a temperature high in the upper 40‘s. Thursday night into Friday may bring rain. There‘s even a chance of snow over the weekend. A lot can happen between now and the end if the week. It‘s already improving. We’ll see what develops…

Tug Hill -- It's Like Riding A Dirty Icecube...
Magnum
Saturday, 5 April 2008, at 12:14 a.m.

The temperature is approximately 32 F degrees. Rain fell on the area through Friday, with a temperature high in the 40‘s. There’s approximately 6 to 30 inches of snow on the Hill. The lower elevation areas, like Turin, Brantingham and Boonville have approximately scattered to 24 inches of snow on the ground.  You may ask why there’s such a differences in snow depths in the same area. Most areas still have over 2 feet of snow, however there’s much less on the trails and open areas, not protected by shade, so These are estimated snow depths on average. Traffic in the area continues to be minimal.

Tonight, the trails are a hard packed, ice/snow, base. I’ll give the credit to Tim Barrows with the unique way to describe the trails… “It’s like riding a dirty icecube”. As the snow continues to settle and melt, all the dirt, dust and tree parts collect on top, giving a brownish color to the snow. Add all the rain we’ve been getting and the snow is well saturated. During the day, as the temperature rises, the trails are soft and somewhat forgiving. At night, as the temperatures are still dropping to the freezing point, most of the trails firm up as hard as a rock and slippery. Hence the description and very good visual… “It’s like riding a dirty icecube”. Be alert as many of the thin or plowed areas are like a sheet of ice as well. The trail system from West Leyden, North to the Hill was moguled & choppy and in fair condition, with thin to bare spots and icy areas. Continuing through Barrows Performance and up McGoldrick Truck Trail, to the intersection of Number 9 Trail, was choppy and in fair condition, with icy areas. Plumber Road, to Smith Road was in fair to good condition. Heading off the Hill, down to Gomer Hill Road, near the Towpath Inn, in Turin, was in fair to good condition, with thin to icy areas. Back to the top of the Hill… Number 9 trail to Tabolts corners was in fair to good condition, with rollers. Carpenter Road to Timberview Lodge was in fair to good condition. Heading South of Timberview, crossing Route 26, heading towards Brantingham was in fair to poor condition, with some thin to bare spots, ice and water run offs. Be alert through this area, especially at night, as the trail marking is hard to see. The Railroad Bed, heading to the Sportsmans was in fair to good condition, with thin and icy areas. Whetstone Reservoir has pooling water and not ridable. There’s a small water hole, in the middle of Tabolts Corners, however it’s very passable. Tabolts Road was in fair to good condition, with rollers and moguls and ice. Houseville Gulf Road was in good to fair condition, with thin spots. Graves Road was in fair to good condition, with rollers and thin spots. There are also a few water washout areas that have frozen over. Be alert to as the temperatures rise, theses areas will be wet and slushy. Be careful!  The French Road was in good to fair condition. Leonards Lane Road was in good to fair condition. Centerville Road to the Flat Rock Inn was in fair to good condition, with rollers and froze over, washout areas. Flat Rock Road to the intersection of Parker & Olin Road was in fair to good condition, with rollers and icy areas. Be alert on the turns and hills, as they are very icy. Parker Road to the Montague Inn was in fair to good condition. Olin Road to the Tug Hill Inn was in fair to good condition, with icy areas. On the lower elevation areas, heading to the drive in theater, from The Edge Hotel or Marino’s Pizza, in Lyons Fall/Turin, was in poor condition, with mud and bare, wet spots, bumpy and icy areas. Continuing to the drive-in theater and the RVI Restaurant, near Rt 12, was in poor condition. The lower areas are pretty much done for the season. There’s limited to no snow cover from Burdicks Crossing Road, to Sweeney Road and continuing to Middle Road, to North-South Road, to Brantingham, to the Pine Tree Inn, located in the middle of Brantingham. You may want to drive by vehicle to Brantingham. Continuing down Partridgeville Road, towards Stillwater, passing the Coach Light Inn and Trailside Restaurant & Tavern, has no snow cover all the way to the trailhead to Stillwater. From Brantingham to Stillwater was in poor condition, with many thin to bare, wet and icy spots. Be alert on the turns, as some are thin to bare and icy. Heading through Boonville, past Charlie Brown’s Bistro was in fair to poor condition. Through the more dense and wooded areas, there’s still snow cover and then gets bare and muddy in the open areas, with some thin, bare, icy and wet spots. Again the lower elevation areas are sketchy. Your best bet for finding consistent snow cover is on the Hill. Be alert in the open fields and on the turns as some are thin to bare and icy as well. Overall the trails on the Hill are still covered, just be alert to icy conditions and I’d recommend taking it easy until you know what the conditions are, instead of flying down a trail and being surprised by a sheet of ice. Saturday through Monday day is expected to be clear, with a temperature high in the upper 40’s and lower 50‘s. Monday night may bring rain, with a temperature high in the lower 50’s. Tuesday through Thursday is expected to be clear, with a temperature high in the 50’s. The temperature lows are still dropping to freezing, in the evening. We’ll see what develops…

Tug Hill -- Still Covered, But Icy...
Magnum
Thursday, 3 April 2008, at 12:39 a.m.

The temperature is approximately 24 F degrees. The Rain that fell over the last couple days have more than saturated everything and the 45+ degree temperatures on Tuesday didn’t helped the area conditions. Wednesday was mostly sunny and cold, so most of the water and slush froze over, making the conditions very icy. There‘s still plenty of snow/ice cover, however the groomers aren‘t rolling and the conditions aren‘t improving. Wednesday had a temperature high in the lower 30‘s. There’s approximately 8 to 36 inches of snow on the Hill. The lower elevation areas, like Turin, Brantingham and Boonville have approximately 6 to 24 inches of snow on the ground.  You may ask why there’s such a differences in snow depths in the same area. Most areas still have over 2 feet of snow, however there’s much less on the trails and open areas, not protected by shade, so These are estimated snow depths on average. Traffic in the area was minimal over the last few days.

Tonight, the trails are a hard packed, ice/snow, base. Be alert as many of the thin or plowed areas are like a sheet of ice. The trail system from West Leyden, North to the Hill was moguled & choppy and in fair condition, with icy areas. Continuing through Barrows Performance and up McGoldrick Truck Trail, to the intersection of Number 9 Trail, was choppy and in fair condition, with icy areas. Theses trails wouldn’t be so bad if Southern Tug Hill would have gotten out this past weekend. Plumber Road, to Smith Road was in fair to good condition. Heading off the Hill, down to Gomer Hill Road, near the Towpath Inn, in Turin, was in fair to good condition, with icy areas. Back to the top of the Hill… Number 9 trail to Tabolts corners was in fair to good condition, with rollers. These trails aren‘t too bad, as the Plataue riders were out Sunday, right before the rain and traffic has been low. The Railroad Bed, heading to the Sportsmans was in fair to good condition, with icy areas. Whetstone Reservoir has pooling water and not ridable. Here’s a small water hole, in the middle of Tabolts Corners, however it’s very passable. Tabolts Road was in fair to good condition, with rollers and moguls and ice. Houseville Gulf Road was in good to fair condition. Graves Road was in fair to good condition, with rollers. There are also a few water washout areas that have frozen over. Be careful!  The French Road was in good to fair condition. Leonards Lane Road was in good to fair condition. Centerville Road to the Flat Rock Inn was in fair to good condition, with rollers and froze over, washout areas. Be alert to Centerville Road, near the Flat Rock Inn. It appears there were ATV‘s running the trials and the end of the trail is very choppy and bumpy from the wheeler‘s tires. On the lower elevation areas, heading to the drive in theater, from The Edge Hotel or Marino’s Pizza, in Lyons Fall/Turin, was in poor condition, with thin to bare, wet spots, bumpy and icy areas. Continuing to the drive-in theater and the RVI Restaurant, near Rt 12, was in poor condition. There’s limited to no snow cover from Burdicks Crossing Road, to Sweeney Road and continuing to Middle Road, to North-South Road, to Brantingham, to the Pine Tree Inn, located in the middle of Brantingham. Heading through Boonville, past Charlie Brown’s Bistro was in fair condition. Through the more dense and wooded areas, there’s still snow cover and then gets bare and muddy in the open areas, with some thin, bare, icy and wet spots. Be alert in the open fields and on the turns as some are thin to bare and icy as well. The Railroad tracks heading to Old Forge from Forestport and Woodgate have cover, however be alert to areas where the rails are showing. Continuing through Thendara and Big Moose Station, the Railroad tracks are covered and in fair condition. Be alert to areas where the rails are exposed. Overall the trails on the Hill are still covered, just be alert to icy conditions and I’d recommend taking it easy until you know what the conditions are, instead of flying down a trail and being surprised by a sheet of ice. Also keep in mind that as the snow melts and trails become sketchy and bare, to stay on the marked trail. If you ride on the Hill, there shouldn’t be any issues with coverage. Also keep in mind that Old Forge’s trails closed on April 1st, if you’re thinking of traveling through that area.

When riding the area, be alert to stumps, rocks and debris, shielded by snow. Open fields are full of hidden surprises. Just stay on the marked trails and you'll be fine. Be alert to riding on lakes and reservoirs. Always talk to locals before riding on what appears to be frozen water. Ride At Your Own Risk..

Thursday day is expected to be clear, with a temperature high in the lower 40’s. Rain or snow may fall by Thursday evening. There’s a chance of rain & snow on Friday, with a temperature high in the upper 30’s. The area may see some new snow accumulations of less than an inch.  Saturday day may bring more snow, with a temperature high in the lower 40's.  Saturday night through Sunday, is expected to be clear.  Monday may bring more rain.  We’ll see what develops…

Magnum
Monday, 31 March 2008, at 1:11 a.m.

The temperature is approximately 34 F degrees. Sunday was a mix of sun and clouds, with a temperature high in the upper 30‘s. There’s approximately 12 to 36 inches of snow on the Hill. The lower elevation areas, like Turin, Brantingham and Boonville have approximately 6 to 24+ inches of snow on the ground.  You may ask why there’s such a differences in snow depths in the same area. Most areas still have over 2 feet of snow, however there’s much less on the trails and open areas, not protected by shade, so These are estimated snow depths on average. Traffic in the area was high through Saturday and was slow through Sunday.

Tonight, the trails are a hard packed, snow/ice, base. The trail system from West Leyden, North to the Hill was choppy and in fair condition. Continuing through Barrows Performance and up McGoldrick Truck Trail, to the intersection of Number 9 Trail, was choppy and in fair condition. Plumber Road, to Smith Road was in fair to good condition. Heading off the Hill, down to Gomer Hill Road, near the Towpath Inn, in Turin, was in fair to good condition. Back to the top of the Hill… Number 9 trail to Tabolts corners was in fair to good condition, with rollers. Carpenter Road to Timberview Lodge was in fair to good condition. Heading South of Timberview, crossing Route 26, heading towards Brantingham was in fair condition, with some thin to bare spots and water run offs. Be alert through this area, especially at night, as the trail marking is hard to see. The Railroad Bed, heading to the Sportsmans was in good to fair condition. Tabolts Road was in fair to good condition, with rollers and moguls. Houseville Gulf Road was in good to fair condition. Graves Road was in good to fair condition, with rollers.  The French Road was groomed and in good to fair condition. Leonards Lane Road was in good to fair condition. Centerville Road to the Flat Rock Inn was in good to fair condition, with rollers. Flat Rock Road to the intersection of Parker & Olin Road was in good to fair condition, with rollers. Parker Road to the Montague Inn was in good to fair condition. Olin Road to the Tug Hill Inn was in good to fair condition. On the lower elevation areas, heading to the drive in theater, from The Edge Hotel or Marino’s Pizza, in Lyons Fall/Turin, was in fair condition, with thin to bare, wet spots, bumpy and icy areas. Continuing to the drive-in theater and the RVI Restaurant, near Rt 12, was in fair condition. Continuing down Partridgeville Road, towards Stillwater, passing the Coach Light Inn and Trailside Restaurant & Tavern, has limited to no snow cover all the way to the trailhead to Stillwater. From Brantingham to Stillwater was in fair to poor condition, with some thin to bare, wet and icy spots. Be alert on the turns, as some are thin to bare and icy. Heading through Boonville, past Charlie Brown’s Bistro was in fair to good condition. Through the more dense and wooded areas, there’s still snow cover and then gets a little sketchy in the open areas, with some thin, bare, icy and wet spots. Be alert in the open fields and on the turns as some are thin to bare and icy as well. The Railroad tracks heading to Old Forge from Forestport and Woodgate have cover, however be alert to areas where the rails are showing. Continuing through Thendara and Big Moose Station, the Railroad tracks are covered and in fair to good condition. Be alert to areas where the rails are exposed.

When riding the area, be alert to stumps, rocks and debris, shielded by snow. Open fields are full of hidden surprises. Just stay on the marked trails and you'll be fine. Tug Hill -- Just When You Thought...
Magnum
Friday, 21 March 2008, at 5:56 a.m.

The temperature is approximately 14 F degrees. Wednesday started out sunny and partly cloudy, with a temperature high in the lower 30‘s. By the afternoon and into the evening, the snow was falling, with 3 to 6 inches of new accumulation and snow drifts over 2 feet high. There’s approximately 18 to 36+ inches of snow on the Hill. The lower elevation areas, like Turin, Brantingham and Boonville have approximately 10 to 24+ inches of snow on the ground.  These are estimated snow depths on average. Traffic in the area was slow on Thursday, but there were many riders hitting the trails.

Tonight, the trails are a hard packed, snow/ice, base, with loose and drifting snow on top. The recent snow really pumped life into the trail system, especially the lower elevation areas. HOPEFULLY the clubs will get out and not disappoint you. You can see on the Rider Cam photos that the area is well covered and short of a bad attitude, the clubs should groom. It’s not often we get such good riding conditions so late in the season. It looks like the weather will not only hold out for this weekend, but it appears snow will be falling through next Thursday. Take advantage of the snow while it’s here. Here’s a perfect example of a bad attitude. Southern Tug Hill’s club made the call before noon on Thursday that they weren’t going to groom that evening, because of the previous rain kept traffic down and the trails “Didn‘t need to be groomed“. Their Website states they groom every day, weather permitting.  6 inches of fresh snow and sub freezing temperatures isn't favorable weather?  If anyone from the club rode the trail, they would have not only seen the trails needed grooming, but their back slamming on the bumps would have. The groomer driver was more then willing to go out and was told “NO“. Maybe if it were earlier in the week and the snow didn’t fall, I could see not going out, But when the snow is falling the day before the weekend, the decision should have been to groom and provide safe trails for riders. This club has been pulling some crazy stunts in the last three weeks.  As the end of the season draws near every weekend we have snow is like gold and for a club like Southern Tug Hill to blatantly turn their back on riders is very sad. Either the club's trails are going to be sketchy all day Friday or the club is going to go out early in the day on Friday and the trails will be sketchy all day Saturday. Either way you the rider suffers. It doesn‘t matter how well you‘ve groomed all season, it‘s what happens at the end that riders remember. DO NOT SUPPORT CLUBS THAT DON‘T GROOM, let alone snub their noses at riders!!! Ask ANY business along Southern Tug Hills trails how happy they are to start the weekend like this! The trail system from West Leyden, North to the Hill was in fair to good condition, with heavy drifting snow. Continuing through Barrows Performance and up McGoldrick Truck Trail, to the intersection of Number 9 Trail, was in fair to good condition, with heavy drifting snow. Be alert of Southern Tug Hills Trails, as the drifting and uneven snow makes it hard to navigate and is potentially unsafe… Plumber Road, to Smith Road was in fair to good condition, with drifting snow. Heading off the Hill, down to Gomer Hill Road, near the Towpath Inn, in Turin, was in fair to good condition, with heavy drifting snow. Back to the top of the Hill… Number 9 trail to Tabolts corners was in fair to good condition, with rollers. This trail may be groomed by morning as the Plateau Riders club grooms late. There’s a novel idea… Carpenter Road to Timberview Lodge was in good to fair condition. Heading South of Timberview, crossing Route 26, heading towards Brantingham was in fair to good condition, with some thin and water run offs, including heavy drifting snow. Be alert through this area, especially at night, as the trail marking is hard to see. The Railroad Bed, heading to the Sportsmans was in fair to good condition, with heavy drifting snow. Tabolts Road was in fair to good condition, with rollers and moguls. Houseville Gulf Road was groomed and in good condition. Graves Road was groomed and in good condition, with drifting snow and rollers.  The French Road was groomed and in good condition, with drifting snow. Leonards Lane Road was groomed and in good condition, with drifting snow. Centerville Road to the Flat Rock Inn was groomed and in good condition, with drifting snow and rollers. This area really needed the snow and Mother Nature came through. Flat Rock Road to the intersection of Parker & Olin Road was groomed and in good condition, with rollers and drifting snow. Parker Road to the Montague Inn was in good to fair condition, with drifting snow. Olin Road to the Tug Hill Inn was in good to fair condition, with drifting snow. On the lower elevation areas, heading to the drive in theater, from The Edge Hotel or Marino’s Pizza, in Lyons Fall/Turin, was in fair to good condition, with thin to bare, wet spots, bumpy and icy areas. It sounds worst then it is. Especially with the new snow, this area is ridable, just a little sketchy. Continuing to the drive-in theater and the RVI Restaurant, near Rt 12, was in fair to good condition. There’s limited snow cover on the roads but good cover along the trail from Burdicks Crossing Road, to Sweeney Road and continuing to Middle Road, to North-South Road, to Brantingham, to the Pine Tree Inn, located in the middle of Brantingham. Continuing down Partridgeville Road, towards Stillwater, passing the Coach Light Inn and Trailside Restaurant & Tavern, has limited snow cover all the way to the trailhead to Stillwater. From Brantingham to Stillwater was in fair to good condition, with some thin to bare, wet and icy spots. Be alert on the turns, as some are thin to bare and icy. Heading through Boonville, past Charlie Brown’s Bistro was in good to fair condition, with some thin to icy and wet spots. Boonville is another area that just got a boost from the new snow. You’ll see on the Rider Cam photos that some of there trails were very thin to bare during the day, before the new snow fell. Most are very passable and you’ll see many of the area trails still had good cover. So they’re even better now with 2 to 5 inches of new snow. Be alert in the open fields and on the turns as some are thin to bare and icy. The Railroad tracks heading to Old Forge from Forestport and Woodgate have cover, however be alert to areas where the rails are showing. Continuing through Thendara and Big Moose Station, the Railroad tracks are covered and in good condition. Be alert to areas where the rails are exposed. For those of you that are heading to the Redfield Osceola area, be sure to check out Big Bear Country Store & Restaurant, located on Rt. 27, overlooking the Reservoir.  Use the link below to find out more.

As an added note. The 2009 Yamaha demo rides will be from 9 am to 7 pm on Saturday and from 9 am to ? On Sunday. The Old Dog & Vintage races start around 11 am. The event is free! I’ll be running around all weekend. Look for the AbsoluteSnowmobile sled. You can see it now, perched atop the snow bank on the Barrow’s Cam. Yes that is me, in the Jeep, in the middle of the night. Many have asked why I don’t ride the AbsoluteSnowmobile/Barrow’s Performance Sled more. Because of the amount of crazy miles I ride, it doesn’t make sense to “Kill” one sled each season, so I distribute the miles I ride on all of TugHillSnowmobileRentals’ snowmobiles. I only ride the Absolut/Barrows sled during the day and this season has been so crazy busy, I just haven’t been able to get out during the day as much as I‘d like. I greatly appreciate Barrows Performance and THSR for being a sponsor. If it weren‘t for them, I wouldn‘t be able to do a daily report. The costs have almost tripled, since I first started AbsoluteSnowmobile. All my sponsors are equally important. Often times people ask how they can help support AbsoluteSnowmobile. By telling our sponsors or fellow riders how important AbsoluteSnowmobile is to you. Especially a weekend like this one, where through Internet message boards and the “Rumor Mill”, have been inaccurate with reporting the true conditions. THANK YOU the viewers for supporting Absolute and our sponsors over the years, making us your number one choice for traveling to the area You guys/girls are the ABSOLUTE BEST!

Tug Hill -- It's Going To Take More Than Luck...
Magnum
Monday, 17 March 2008, at 12:58 a.m.

T
he temperature is approximately 15 F degrees. Sunday day was mostly cloudy, with a temperature high in the lower 30‘s. By Sunday evening, the temperature took a dive, to well below freezing. There’s approximately 20 to 36+ inches of snow on the Hill.  The lower elevation areas, like Turin, Brantingham and Boonville have approximately 8 to 24+ inches of snow on the ground.  These are estimated snow depths on average. Traffic in the area was slow on Sunday. Saturday the area temperatures rose well above freezing, with a heavy fog and mist. The trails didn‘t hold up long. Many were happy to get a last ride in. As with last year, we can very easily get another heavy snow storm through the area towards the end of the month.

Tonight, the trails are a hard packed, snow/ice, base. The trail system from West Leyden, North to the Hill was in fair to good condition. Continuing through Barrows Performance and up McGoldrick Truck Trail, to the intersection of Number 9 Trail, was in fair to good condition. Plumber Road, to Smith Road was in fair condition. Heading off the Hill, down to Gomer Hill Road, near the Towpath Inn, in Turin, was in fair to good condition. Be alert through this area, especially at night, as the trail marking is hard to see. The Railroad Bed, heading to the Sportsmans was in fair condition. Tabolts Road was in fair condition, with rollers. Houseville Gulf Road was in fair to poor condition. Graves Road was in fair to poor condition.  The French Road was in fair to poor condition. Leonards Lane Road was in fair to poor condition.  Continuing on Centerville Road to Flat Rock Inn, was in fair to poor condition, with rollers.  Flat Rock Road to the intersection of Parker & Olin Road was in fair to poor condition. Obviously Valley Snow Travelers didn't groom.  That's actually two days in a row.  I'm not going to go into a big rant, BUT!  This is a perfect example why Valley should loose the trails again.  They've had two seasons now to show they can handle the trails.  They made promises to get the trails back that the club hasn't met, including the president of the club would not be involved with the grooming, yet he has.  Calls to Valleys President this weekend were met with a RUDE "Are you a member?".  If you answered no, the call was disconnected.  It happened to me.  The Vice President of the club used the temperature as an excuse, however clubs North, South, East and West all groomed, including clubs on the lower elevation areas.  You can't blame me for being "Mr. Doom & Gloom" because the entire top end of the Hill was and is in bad condition.  I did talk to a number of businesses that reported people left the area earlier then planned because the trails were so bad. Effecting the economy??  The clubs to the North like Barnes Corners and Missing Links had great trails Sunday morning, but Valley who has connecting trails say "The temperatures were too high and the snow was too wet".  Who are you going to believe?? A club with excuses or clubs that had good trails?? MAYBE one night, but two days in a row??  Did you know how happen to see how Valley NEVER uses the cutter blades on their drag??  This is the first set of blades on the drag that cut out all the bumps.  Then there's a second series of blades that the snow goes through before getting flattened out.  The groomer drivers lift up the drag and cutter blades, using the second set of blades.  That's not how the equipment is designed to work or function.  Why?  "To save gas".  That's why the trails, especially Centerville & Flat Rock Road has rollers.  I urge ALL members of Valley Snow Travelers to contact the club and demand they stop creating unsafe trails by neglecting and not maintaining them properly.  It's not "Club Money", it's "Riders' Money".  If the club can't handle maintaining the trail, it should be given up!  Parker Road to the Montague Inn was in good to fair condition. Olin Road to the Tug Hill Inn was in fair to good condition. On the lower elevation areas, heading to the drive in theater, from The Edge Hotel or Marino’s Pizza, in Lyons Fall/Turin, was in fair to poor condition, with thin to bare, wet spots, bumpy and icy areas. Continuing to the drive-in theater and the RVI Restaurant, near Rt 12, was in fair condition. There’s limited snow cover on the roads but good cover along the trail from Burdicks Crossing Road, to Sweeney Road and continuing to Middle Road, to North-South Road, to Brantingham, to the Pine Tree Inn,
