Old Forge -- Sun & Warm Temps... Ride Early...
By Magnum

Friday, 05 March 2010, at 2:19 a.m.
The temperature is approximately 28 degrees.  It was mostly overcast on Thursday, with a temperature high in the lower 30's.  There's approximately 10 to 24+ inches of snow on the ground.  A little more as you travel North towards the Stillwater Inn.  The lower areas like Brantingham and Boonville have approximately 8 to 20+ inches of snow on the ground.  A note about the snow depths...  Driving through the area, you'll find places that have 2 feet and within a 100 yards, there's half of that amount.  The snow banks along the road is over 3 feet high (I don't count the snow banks).  So I try and give an average of what's on the ground in each area.   In addition, although it's great that we still have snow, keep in mind that the temperatures have been hovering right above freezing, so the trails aren't going to hold up as long.  Get out early for the best conditions.  Traffic in the area was low on Wednesday...

Tonight, the trails are hard packed.  South of Thendara towards White Lake was in good to fair condition, with thin and wet spots. Continuing South to Forestport and Alder Creek was in good to fair condition, with thin to bare and wet spots. Heading towards Boonville was in fair to good condition, with thin to bare and wet spots.  The Railroad tracks heading to Big Moose Station were in fair to good condition.  Be alert to where the rails are exposed. Trail 1 heading out of Old Forge was in good to fair condition with thin to bare and wet spots.  Trail 3 was in good to fair condition, with thin to bare and wet spots.  Trails 7, 8, and 9 were in good to fair condition, with thin to bare and wet spots.  Trail 10 was in fair to good condition, with some thin to bare and wet spots.  As you travel on Trail 5 towards Route 28, the roads have thin to bare snow cover.  Continuing on Trail 5 past Daiker’s Inn was in good to fair condition, with thin to bare and wet spots. Heading through Inlet was in good to fair condition, with thin to bare and wet spots. Continuing towards Moose River Plains was in fair to good condition, with thin to bare and wet spots. Passing Limekiln Lake, through the Moose River Pains was in good to fair condition, with thin to bare spots.  Be alert on the turns as some are thin to bare as well.  Heading North to Stillwater, using Big Moose Road, has mostly bare snow coverage through Eagle Bay. Heading South to Brantingham was in good to fair condition, with thin to bare and wet spots. Continuing past the Pine Tree Inn, has thin to bare snow cover. Continuing to the drive-in theater and the RVI Restaurant, near Rt.12, has thin to bare snow coverage and was in fair condition, with wet areas.   If your sled tends to overheat, you may have an issue getting to this area along the roads.    Ride early for the best conditions.

When riding the area, be alert to riding in fields, where stumps, rocks and debris are shielded by snow. Open fields are full of hidden surprises. Just stay on the marked trails and you'll be fine. Be alert to riding on lakes and reservoirs. Always talk to locals before riding on what appears to be frozen water.  Ride At Your Own Risk.

Thursday through Sunday is expected to be clear, with a temperature high in the lower to mid 30's.  There's a chance of rain on Monday, with a temperature high in the mid 30's.  Fortunately it looks like the snow may  fall by Monday night and continue through Thursday.  We'll see what develops.

Old Forge -- Not What You'd Think...
By Magnum

Saturday, 26 February 2010, at 4:00 a.m.
The temperature is approximately 30 degrees.  It was mostly overcast on Friday, with the sun shining periodically and a temperature high in the lower 40's on the lower elevation and in the mid 30's in greater Old Forge.  Snow flurries fell on the area as well, with approximately 4 to 6 inches of new snow in the last 24 hours.  We're not getting the crazy snow accumulations like in the Southern part of the state or even 40 miles South, near Utica that received 2 feet.  There's approximately 12 to 24+ inches of snow on the ground.  A little more as you travel North towards the Stillwater Inn.  The lower areas like Brantingham and Boonville have approximately 14 to 20+ inches of snow on the ground.  A note about the snow depths...  Driving through the area, you'll find places that have 2 feet and within a 100 yards, there's half of that amount.  The snow banks along the road is over 3 feet high.  So I try and give an average of what's on the ground in each area.  In addition, although it's great that we're getting all this snow, keep in mind that the temperatures have been hovering right above freezing, so the trails aren't going to hold up as long.  They were slushy and mushy through Friday day.  Get out early for the best conditions.  Traffic in the area was low on Friday...

Old Forge  Snow's Been Falling, But Not Accumulating...
By Magnum

Saturday, 20 February 2010, at 1:28 a.m.
The temperature is approximately 26 degrees.  Snow flurries fell on the area through the day on Friday, with a temperature high in the upper 20's to lower 30's and less than an inch of new accumulation.  There's approximately 6 to 12+ inches of snow on the ground.  A little more as you travel North towards Stillwater Inn.  The lower areas like Brantingham and Boonville have approximately 5 to 8+ inches of snow.  A note about the snow depths...  Because of the type of snow and how it's drifting, there are areas that have deeper accumulation than areas that are exposed to the sun, that'll have less snow.  I try and give an average.  Traffic in the area has continued to be busy through the holiday week.  There are many groups and families on the trails, so be a little more patient, use hand signals and stay right...

Old Forge -- Direct Hit!!!
By Magnum

Friday, 29 January 2010, at 1:51 a.m.
The temperature is approximately -1 degrees.  Snow fell on the area for most of the day on Thursday, with a temperature high in the upper teens, and approximately 3 to 5 inches of new accumulation.  There's approximately scattered to 6 inches of snow on the ground.  The lower areas like Brantingham and Boonville have approximately 2 to 4 inches of new snow.  Traffic in the area picked up.

The good news is the area received a good amount of snow, just in time for the weekend.  Not that it's bad news, but the type of snow that's fallen, is a very fine, small type flake, meaning it's like sugar.  Why is this not the greatest type snow??  Because it doesn't pack well.  It basically means the trails won't hold up as long to a high amount of traffic.  Many riders were scarred off because of the sketch conditions at the beginning of the week and may have canceled their weekend trip.  It'll be interesting to see how much traffic rolls in.

Tonight, the trails have firmed up, with loose snow on top.  South of Thendara towards White Lake was in good to fair condition, with icy spots. Continuing South to Forestport and Alder Creek was in good to fair condition, with icy spots. Heading towards Boonville was in good to fair condition, with thin spots and icy areas.  The Railroad tracks heading to Big Moose Station were in fair condition.  Be alert to where the rails are exposed. Trail 1 heading out of Old Forge was in good condition.  Trail 3 was in good condition, with icy spots.  Be alert on the turns as they're thin and icy.  Trails 7, 8, and 9 were in good condition, with icy spots.  Be alert on the turns as they're thin and icy.  Trail 10 was in good to fair condition, with some thin and icy spots.  As you travel on Trail 5 towards Route 28, the roads have thin snow cover.  Continuing on Trail 5 past Daiker’s Inn was in good condition. Heading through Inlet was in good to fair condition, with icy spots. Continuing towards Moose River Plains was in fair to good condition, with thin and icy spots. Passing Limekiln Lake, through the Moose River Pains was in good condition, with thin and icy spots.  Be alert on the turns as some are thin and icy.  Heading North to Stillwater, using Big Moose Road, has thin snow coverage through Eagle Bay. Heading South to Brantingham was in fair to good condition, with thin and icy areas. Continuing past the Pine Tree Inn, has thin snow cover. Continuing to the drive-in theater and the RVI Restaurant, near Rt.12, has thin snow coverage and was in good to fair condition, with icy areas.

As an added note and a reminder,  There's a great Italian deli located right across the street from Kinney Drugs called Aliasso's.  They have great homemade food, salads, soups and pastries.  If you have a groip coming up to the area, order one of their platters ahead of time and pick it up as you drive through the area.  If you're looking for more of a sitdown meal, Try Frankie's Restaurant, located next to the Skidoo Dealer, just before you get into town.  It'll be one of the best meals you'll have.  Be sure to tell these and all the great businesses that support AbsoluteSnowmobile, that Magnum sent you...

Snow is in the forecast through Friday day, with a temperature high in the lower single digits.  By Friday evening, it's expected to be clear, with sub zero temperatures.  Saturday is expected to be clear, with the temperature highs in the single digits.  There's a chance of snow on Sunday, with a temperature highs in the upper teens.  Sunday night through Tuesday is expected to be clear, with a temperature high in the mid 20's.  We'll see what develops.

Wednesday, 27 January 2010, at 12:14 a.m.
The temperature is approximately 30 degrees.  Snow fell on the area for most of the day on Tuesday, with a temperature high in the upper 20's.  A combination of the ground being warm and a dry type snow, resulted in not much more than a heavy dusting.  Even the roads were clear and dry.    There's approximately scattered to 6 inches of snow on the ground.  The lower areas like Brantingham and Boonville have approximately scattered to 5 inches of snow.  Traffic was at it's lowest, as there were very few riders hitting the trails.

Tonight, the trails have firmed up an are icy. Again, I didn't ride this evening.  The trails need more snow.  Currently the trails are thin and icy.  Many of the trails in the area are still covered and ridable, but as the temperatures dropped, they became very icy.

Snow is expected to fall on Wednesday, with 3 to 6 inches of new snow, with a temperature high in the mid 20's.  More snow is expected from Thursday, with 1 to 3 inches of new snow and a temperature high in the lower 20's.   Snow is in the forecast on Friday as well, with a temperature high in the single digits.  Saturday is expected to be clear, with the temperature highs in the single digits.  There's a chance of snow on Sunday, with a temperature highs in the upper teens.  Sunday night through Tuesday is expected to be clear, with a temperature high in the mid 20's.  We'll see what develops.

Old Forge -- Fresh Snow On The Way...
By Magnum

Tuesday, 26 January 2010, at 12:06 a.m.
The temperature is approximately 30 degrees.  A heavy rain fell on the area for most of the day on Monday, with a temperature high in the upper 40's.   There's approximately scattered to 6 inches of snow on the ground.  The lower areas like Brantingham and Boonville have approximately scattered to 5 inches of snow.  Traffic was at it's lowest, as no one was riding.

Tonight, the trails are soft and saturated.   Again, I didn't ride this evening, due to the heavy rain, but I wanted to keep you up to date on what's happening.  Yes, at the time of this report, the rain has subsided.  Everything is well saturated.  The rain has put a pause on riding.  Many of the trails in the area are still covered and ridable, but as the temperatures drop, they're going to be very icy.  As bad as it all my seem, the good news is there's snow in the forecast and it looks like we can get 6 to 12 inches of new snow by the weekend.  As the week goes on and we approach the weekend, the temperatures are expected to drop to the single digits.

Snow is expected to fall on Tuesday, with 3 to 8 inches of new snow, with a temperature high in the mid 20's.  More snow is expected from Wednesday through Saturday, with the temperature highs in the lower 20's.  The temperatures are expected to decline as we approach the weekend.  We'll see what develops.

Old Forge -- It Was A Good Run...

Monday, 25 January 2010, at 1:20 a.m.
The temperature is approximately 40 degrees.  Sunday was mostly overcast, with a temperature high in the upper 30's.  By evening the rain started to fall.  There's approximately 4 to 12 inches of snow on the ground.  The lower areas like Brantingham and Boonville have approximately 4 to 8+ inches of snow.  Traffic in the area was low on Sunday.

Tonight, the trails are soft and saturated.   I didn't ride this evening, due to the heavy rain, but I wanted to update you to what's happening.  Yes, at the time of this report, a heavy rain was falling.  Everything is well saturated.  Many of the trails in the area will survive.  Keep in mind that we've been riding on the same snow for the last month and a half.  January is also known as a thaw month, so we've been lucky to make it this far.  That's the positive spin...  The good news is by Monday evening, the rain is expected to turn over to snow and continue through next weekend, with the temperature highs remaining well below freezing.  How much of the white stuff we'll get is the big question...

Rain is expected to fall through Monday, with a temperature high in the lower 40's. By Monday night the rain is expected to turn over to snow.  The snow is expected to fall everyday through Saturday, with the temperature highs in the mid 20's.  We'll see what develops.

The temperature is approximately 20 degrees.  The snow has been falling for the last few days, with 1 to 2 inches of new snow and a temperature high barely making it out of the single digits.  There's approximately 10 to 14 inches of snow on the ground.  The lower areas like Brantingham and Boonville have approximately 8 to 12 inches of snow.  Traffic in the area has been low.

Tonight, the trails are hard packed, with loose snow on top.  South of Thendara towards White Lake was in good condition. Continuing South to Forestport and Alder Creek was in good to fair condition. Heading towards Boonville was in good condition.  The Railroad tracks heading to Big Moose Station were in good to fair condition.  Be alert to where the rails are exposed. Many of you are avid listeners of the Snowmobile show IROC & Beyond with Lee Hinkleman.  I (Magnum) was a guest on this weeks show.  It's a very informative show, with information about our sport and the area we ride.  Lee many times does interviews along the trails with riders on the Tug Hill & Old Forge areas.  I highly recommend checking it out and listening to the weekly show.

The temperature is approximately -9 F degrees. In the past week, the area has received a few more inches of snow, on top of the 2 feet that was already on the ground, although we've also received a little bit of rain, which has settled the snow down to 12 to 18 inches.  Fortunately the temperatures have been well below freezing, so we've established a great base. Thursday was mostly clear, with a temperature high in the single digits.  Although there have been snowmobilers hitting the area trails, traffic in the area has been low.  This along with great grooming and extremely cold temperatures, have been a formula for awesome trail conditions.

By late afternoon Wednesday, the rain was falling and the snow on the ground was well saturated. There's approximately 1 to 3 inches on the lower level areas like the Town of Old Forge and Boonville.  The higher elevation areas have a couple inches more with 3 to 5 inches.

I know from your Emails many of you are still on the fence about coming up this weekend...  Some have mentioned that the area is expected to receive 3 feet of new accumulation.  I haven't seen anything of that magnitude.  That is the crazy thing about the area...  Depending how a system passes through the area or if it stalls right on top of us, we could get pounded.  That's why I'd never tell someone to not come to the area.  All I do is give you the most information so you can make the decision yourself.  Everyone has different riding styles and some don't care what the conditions are.  A bad day on the trails, still beats a good day at work!!  The good news is the forecast is calling for heavy snow from now through Friday, with a foot plus of new accumulation.  There will definitely enough snow to take a ride, but keep in mind there'll be no base and if the traffic is heavy, the conditions won't last.  So plan to hit the trails early.  Avoid the lakes and reservoirs for now.

Heavy snow is expected on Thursday with the temperature high in the mid 20's and a low in the upper teens and approximately 3 to 6 inches of new snow.  The snow is expected to fall through Thursday night into Friday, with 8 to 12 inches of additional snow.  The wind is expected to be blowing, so expect high snow drifts.  More snow is expected Friday, heavy at times, with a temperature high in the lower 20's and a low in the single digits.  Snow is expected to fall through Saturday morning, before becoming clear, with a temperature high in the upper teens and a low in the single digits.  Snow is in the forecast all through next week, with freezing temperatures.

Finally, I'd like to take a moment and thank all of you that took the time out of their busy lives to send a message offering their condolences about my father's passing...  With over 20 years of public service as a Councilman and Mayor, one of the greatest gifts passed down to me from my father was the value of being passionate about things you believe in, hard work and doing for others.  I'd like to think his legacy lives on...

Old Forge
- Start The Snow Dance...
By Magnum

Monday, 07 December 2009, at 12:25 a.m.
The majority of the area trails open today.  There's an extra week of hunting season in some areas, so next Saturday is Snodeo and all snowmobile trails will be open.   Mother Nature has been nappining and unfortunately the season is getting a late start due to the lack of snow.  It's been relatively warm, with the temperatures in the 40's for the last month.  Even if the snow fell, it wouldn't be good as the ground need a chance to freeze.  Fortunately the temperatures have dropped over the last few days.  The area received an inch or two on Sunday and although it's not even close enough to ride, hopefully it'll bee a good omen  for the upcoming season.  There is snow in the forecast every day this coming week.  Although there is the process of forming a base, hopefully the temperatures will stay low and the snow will fall fast and furiously.

It's been actually pretty quite in the area.  There are some new businesses and advertisers as well.  Unfortunately I'm a little behind for the season due to my father recently passing away.  It's caused me to be out of town for a period of time, but I'm back and gearing up for the new season.  Area cams should be back online shortly.  Stay positive and we'll be riding shortly...

Old Forge
- Welcome Back To An Anniversary Year
By Magnum

Wednesday, 09 September 2009, at 12:02 a.m.
Welcome back boys and girls!  It’s that time again, as the temperatures start to drop.  Although this will go down as one of the more mild and wet Summers on record.  The Summers seem to go pretty fast and it feels like we just put the sleds away for the season.  With the first issue of snowmobile magazines out, the grass drag circuits heating up and the Big East Snowmobile Show just a month away, you can just about smell the two stoke exhaust in the air.  Within the next couple of weeks the area will probably see its first frost and by the end of October we’ll probably see the fist of the white stuff falling.  The last two seasons, we’ve had snow for Halloween and with all the moisture the area’s seen over the past few months, hopefully it’ll translate into another good snowfall season.  Because of the lower traffic and most of the area clubs doing a great job maintaining the trails, it was one of the better seasons for great trail conditions.

As a matter of fact, this will be the 10th year, an anniversary year, for AbsoluteSnowmobile.  Talk about time flying by!!  It’s incredibly humbling that you’ve supported the site over the years…  Although the site has changed, the core foundation of it hasn’t, offering the most reliable area conditions.  Thanks to you all, it has remained the highest ranked site in the area and one of the highest ranked sites in the country.  Since AbsoluteSnowmobile was created, a little over 9 years ago, it’s received over 2 billion visits.  That’s insane!!  I thank not only the viewers, but all the sponsors over the years that have come back on year after year and supported the site.   Even the past few seasons, with a bad economy and their limited budgets, I greatly appreciated your support.  There’s a link below that’ll tell the story of how AbsoluteSnowmobile started.  I know many of you were riding the area for many years before the site started and even before I was riding the area.  You have even a greater appreciation of how far the area has come.  It’s amazing to look back and reflect on even the past 10 years when the clubs didn’t know if they were going to be able to secure insurance and every year there was drama if the trails would even open.  With the age of the Internet, snowmobile clubs are under a higher scrutiny about maintaining the trails and clubs that wouldn’t groom weren’t able to hide.  The Internet itself has been one of the driving forces behind the areas growth and change.   Snowmobile technology has improved by leaps and bounds.  Most importantly, have been the suspensions.  Yes, the current designs do look mean and fast, but the technology just over the past five years has been amazing.  It’s hard to fathom what will come out over the next five years, but I’m sure we’re all drooling with anticipation.

That’s where the vintage sled shows help reflect how far the technology and the sport has come.  I never get tired of going to them.  Speaking of which, there's the Hudon's Sled Salvage 3rd Annual Vintage Snowmobile Show & Swap Meet, on October 10th, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at  8187 State Route 12, Barneveld, NY. 315-896-4357, Registration from 8 – 10 Gates open at 8, Trophies awarded at 1. FREE sled corral, bring your sled and parts to sell or trade. For more info use the link below.  Hudon’s is about 15 minutes North of Utica on Rt. 12.  Most of you pass it on the way to Old Forge & Tug Hill.  It’s one of the LARGEST snowmobile salvage businesses in the world!!  They sell new parts as well, but as a snowmobile enthusiast, you’re amazed just walking through this place.  From hoods, tunnels and clutches, to brand new sleds that have never been ridden and parted out.  They buy tractor trailers full of snowmobile parts from all over the U.S.  It’s almost a museum of parts and accessories. The swap meet and vintage show gets better and better every year.  Be sure to check it out.  Even if you don’t make it to the show, you owe it to yourself to check it out on your next visit to the area or check out their site if you need parts.

Be sure to stop back, as I’ll be updating this page regularly, keeping you up to date about what’s going on as we approach the new season.
