Old Forge -- Still Riding...
By Magnum

Friday, 20 March 2009, at 12:44 a.m.
The temperature is approximately 34 F degrees. The last few days have been pretty warm and sunny, with a temperature high in the upper 40's.
Old Forge has approximately scattered to 6 inches of snow on the ground. The higher elevation areas like Stillwater have approximately 4 to 10 inches more. The lower elevation areas like Forestport have scattered to 12 inches and Brantingham has scattered to 8 inches of snow on the ground.  The sun and warm temperatures have been brutal on the snow cover and conditions.  There are many areas where the ground is showing. Traffic in the area has been low, but there are a few riders still running the trails.

There's snow in the forecast for Saturday and hopefully it'll be enough to not only improve the current conditions, but cover the bare spots.Old Forge's inner trail system is still ridable, however there are some bare spots. Most are still passable and this may be the last decent ride of the season. Pray or do a snow dance for a final blast of snow and hopefully the season will be prolonged a week or two  The daily reports basically end as the grooming stops.  Without grooming, the trails will get progressively worst.  I'll continue to update the reports until there's no riding left, it just won't be daily.  Old Forge's trails close on April 1st.  Tonight, the trails are hard packed, with loose snow on top and many wet and icy spots.  South of Thendara towards White Lake was in fair to good condition, with thin to bare and icy areas. Continuing South to Forestport and Alder Creek was in fair to good condition, with thin to bare and icy areas. Heading towards Boonville is basically closed.  The Railroad tracks heading to Big Moose Station were in fair to poor condition, with rails exposed. Trail 1 heading out of Old Forge was in good to fair condition, with thin to bare and icy spots.  Trail 3 was in good to fair condition, with thin to bare and icy spots.  Trails 7, 8, and 9 were in good to fair condition, with some thin to bare and icy areas. Trail 10 was in  fair to poor condition, with thin to bare and icy areas.  As you travel on Trail 5 towards Route 28, the roads have no snow cover and some ice. Continuing on Trail 5 past Daiker’s Inn was in fair to poor condition, with thin to bare spots and ice. Heading through Inlet was in fair to poor condition, with some thin to bare and icy spots. Continuing towards Moose River Plains was in poor condition, with bare and icy areas. Passing Limekiln Lake, through the Moose River Pains was in fair to poor condition, with thin to bare and icy areas.  The snow depths increased as you approach the Big T, but you'll hit some bare spots to get there.  Heading North to Stillwater, using Big Moose Road, has no snow coverage through Eagle Bay. Heading South to Brantingham was in fair condition, with thin to bare and icy areas. Continuing past the Pine Tree Inn has no snow cover. Continuing to the drive-in theater and the RVI Restaurant, near Rt.12, has no snow coverage and was in poor condition. Ride early for the best conditions.

When riding the area, be alert to riding in fields, where stumps, rocks and debris are shielded by snow. Open fields are full of hidden surprises. Just stay on the marked trails and you'll be fine. Be alert to riding on lakes and reservoirs. Always talk to locals before riding on what appears to be frozen water.  Currently places like 4th Lake are very slushy, be careful. Ride At Your Own Risk.

Friday is expected to be clear, with a temperature high in the mid 30's.  Saturday into Sunday may bring snow showers, with a temperature high in the upper 30's.  Monday through Wednesday is expected to be clear,  with a temperature high in the mid to upper 30's.  Wednesday night into Thursday may bring snow.  We'll see what develops...

Old Forge -- Spring Forward...
By Magnum

Sunday, 08 March 2009, at 12:10 a.m.
The temperature is approximately 40 F degrees. It rained for most of the day on Friday into Saturday and then again Saturday evening, with a temperature high in the lower 40's.
Old Forge has approximately scattered to 12 inches of snow on the ground. The higher elevation areas like Stillwater have approximately 4 to 10 inches more. The lower elevation areas like Forestport have scattered to 16 inches and Brantingham has scattered to 12 inches of snow on the ground.  There are some areas where the ground is showing. These are estimated snow depths on average.  Traffic in the area was low, although there were a good amount of sledders riding.

Tonight, the trails are hard packed and well saturated.  There was no ride this evening, but I thought I'd give everyone an update.  The rain and warm weather have depleted a good amount of snow.  The lower elevation areas have taken the biggest hit and without any new snow, it's going to be difficult getting through theses areas without hitting any bare and muddy spots.  I like to be a "Glass half full" kind of person and it's still relatively early in the month.  Hopefully we'll get one last blast of snow to blanket the area.  It's never too late to start the snow dance.

There's a chance of rain on Sunday, with a temperature high in the lower 40''s.  Monday inti Tuesday there's a chance of rain mixed ith snow, with a temperature high in the mid 30's.  Wednesday day may bring more rain, before changing over to snow by evening, with the temperature highs in the lower 40's.  Thursday may bring more snow.  We'll see what develops...

Old Forge -- Temperatures Drop...
By Magnum

Sunday, 01 March 2009, at 12:31 a.m.
The temperature is approximately 10 F degrees. The snow that fell into Saturday morning wasn't enough to cover and recover some of the areas that were hard hit by the recent rain.  The drop in temperatures have been extremely helpful in all areas, to at least help to maintain flat trails and good riding conditions.
Old Forge has approximately 4 to 18 inches of snow on the ground. The higher elevation areas like Stillwater have approximately 4 to 10 inches more. The lower elevation areas like Forestport have 4 to 20+ inches and Brantingham has 4 to 18+ inches of snow on the ground. These are estimated snow depths on average.  Traffic in the area was was busy.  Many riders ignored the less favorable forecast and traveled to the area.

As an added note, if you're planning a trip to the area this weekend, the area should still be in good shape.  The rain that's in the forecast is expected to bring a quarter to a half an inch of precipitation, which won't effect the conditions much.  Only the paved roads may be effected, however there's snow in the forecast for Friday, which will help recover the conditions.  Fortunately the groomers will be rolling before the rain falls.  That will be a determining factor.

When riding the area, be alert to riding in fields, where stumps, rocks and debris are shielded by snow. Open fields are full of hidden surprises. Just stay on the marked trails and you'll be fine. Old Forge -- Mother Nature Shows Last Minute Love
By Magnum

Friday, 13 February 2009, at 4:41 a.m.
The temperature is approximately 21 F degrees. Rain fell on the area into the late morning, before turning over to flurries, with a temperature high in the mid 30's.  By late afternoon the snow was falling heavier, however some of the lower elevation areas like Boonville was still receiving light rain.  By evening snow was falling on the lower elevation areas, with 1 to 3 inches of new snow and 1 to 4 inches of new accumulation on the higher elevation areas.
Old Forge has approximately 6 to 24 inches of snow on the ground. The higher elevation areas like Stillwater have approximately 4 to 10 inches more. The lower elevation areas like Forestport have 8 to 20+ inches and Brantingham has 6 to 18+ inches of snow on the ground. These are estimated snow depths on average.  Traffic in the area picked up into the evening.

Fortunately the groomers have been out daily, so the area trails are in good shape and 100% covered.  There are a few of the turns that are thin to bare.  Check out the photos to see what I'm talking about.  There are a few puddles and thin areas on the lower elevation areas, as well.  Tonight, the trails are hard packed, with 1 to 3 inches of loose snow on top.  South of Thendara towards White Lake was in good condition. Continuing South to Forestport and Alder Creek was in good to fair condition. Heading towards Boonville was in good to fair condition.  The Railroad tracks heading to Big Moose Station were in good to fair condition.  Be alert to where the rails are exposed. Trail 1 heading out of Old Forge was groomed and in good condition.  Trail 3 was groomed and in good condition, with a few turns that are thin to bare.  Trails 7, 8, and 9 were groomed and in good condition. Trail 10 was groomed and in good to fair condition, with thin cover on the turns.  As you travel on Trail 5 towards Route 28, the roads have thin to limited snow cover. Continuing on Trail 5 past Daiker’s Inn was groomed and in good to fair condition. Heading through Inlet was groomed and in good condition. Continuing towards Moose River Plains was groomed and in good condition. Passing Limekiln Lake, through the Moose River Pains was groomed and in good condition.  The snow depths increased as you approach the Big T as well.  Heading North to Stillwater, using Big Moose Road, has limited snow coverage through Eagle Bay. Heading North on Stillwater Road to Stillwater has better cover, past Trail 2 and 10. Heading South to Brantingham was in fair condition. Continuing past the Pine Tree Inn, has limited snow cover. Continuing to the drive-in theater and the RVI Restaurant, near Rt.12, has limited to thin snow coverage and was in fair condition. Ride early for the best conditions.

As an added note, if you're looking for something a little different while in the area, check out the Soda Fountain Restaurant in Remsen, which is South of Boonville.  It's a 50's style restaurant with great atmosphere and food.  Check out the link below.  I've also added a link to I.R.O.C. & Beyond Snowmobile Show.  I was invited into the studio this week as a guest.  Tune into the interview as well as other great topics about our sport.  In addition, you'll see a lot of brown snow in the day photos of the trails.  That. sand, pollen and dirt that had settled on the surface of the the trails and snow banks because of the recent thaw.  At the time of this report it's all been covered with the recent snow fall.  The conditions are better now.  That's why I waited to evening for the photos, so it gives you the most accurate idea of the conditions...

When riding the area, be alert to riding in fields, where stumps, rocks and debris are shielded by snow. Open fields are full of hidden surprises. Just stay on the marked trails and you'll be fine. Old Forge  --  Zero Visibility
By Magnum

Thursday, 12 February 2009, at 12:39 a.m.
The temperature is approximately 46 F degrees. Around mid afternoon on Wednesday, the rain started to fall and continued through early evening, with a temperature high in the mid 40's and the upper 40's on the lower elevation areas.  At the time of this report, the rain was coming down pretty steady and thick fog was covering the area.
Old Forge has approximately 6 to 28 inches of snow on the ground. The higher elevation areas like Stillwater have approximately 4 to 10 inches more. The lower elevation areas like Forestport have 10 to 20+ inches and Brantingham has 6 to 18+ inches of snow on the ground. These are estimated snow depths on average.  Traffic in the area was a ghost town on Wednesday.

Currently the snow is well saturated and there's pooling water on the trails.  Tonight, I didn't ride because of the rain and frankly any rider that isn't living under a rock knew it was going to rain through early Friday morning and there isn't going to be much riding until possibly Thursday evening.  The good news is there's still plenty of snow on the higher elevation areas and the majority of the lower elevation areas, North of Alder Creek, still have snow.  Alder Creek is just South of Boonville.  Gusting winds over 30 mph and snow is in the forecast by Thursday afternoon, with the temperatures expected to drop to the mid 20's by early evening.  3 to 6 inches of fresh snow are expected to fall by Friday.  As the temperature drops, be alert to icy conditions.

The rain is expected continue into Thursday morning, before turning over to snow by early afternoon, with a temperature high in the upper 20's.   By Thursday evening the temperatures are expected to fall a little more to the lower to mid 20's and the snow is forecasted to continue with 2 to 6 inches of fresh accumulation.  Friday is expected to be clear, with the temperature highs in the mid 20's.  Saturday through President's weekend is expected to be clear, with a temperature high in the mid 20's.  We'll see what develops.

Old Forge  --  Warm Temps But No Rain...
By Magnum
Wednes
day, 11 February 2009, at 1:22 a.m.
The temperature is approximately 41 F degrees. Tuesday was mostly overcast, with a temperature high in the upper 30's and lower 40's on the lower elevation areas.  Old Forge has approximately 16 to 34 inches of snow on the ground. The higher elevation areas like Stillwater have approximately 4 to 10 inches more. The lower elevation areas like Forestport have 18 to 28+ inches and Brantingham has 18 to 28+ inches of snow on the ground. These are estimated snow depths on average.  Traffic in the area was low on Tuesday.

As for now, the trails are in good shape with plenty of snow, so if the rain does roll through, the trails are flat and with traffic down there should be little to worry about heading into the weekend. Tonight, the trails are a hard packed base, with soft snow on top.  South of Thendara towards White Lake was in good condition. Continuing South to Forestport and Alder Creek was in good to fair condition. Heading towards Boonville was in good to fair condition.  The Railroad tracks heading to Big Moose Station were in fair to good condition.  Be alert to where the rails are exposed. Trail 1 heading out of Old Forge was groomed and in good condition.  Trail 3 was groomed and in good condition.  Trails 7, 8, and 9 were groomed and in good condition. Trail 10 was groomed and in good condition.  As you travel on Trail 5 towards Route 28, the roads have thin to limited snow cover. Continuing past the Pine Tree Inn, has limited to no snow cover. Continuing to the drive-in theater and the RVI Restaurant, near Rt.12, has limited to no snow coverage and was in fair condition. Ride early for the best conditions.  Note that because of the warmer temperatures, the area roads have lost their snow/ice cover and are mostly bare.  Hopefully the snow that's expected by the end of the week will change that, making it easier to get around.

"Mi Machi". Ride At Your Own Risk.

The area may see some rain on Wednesday afternoon, with a temperature high in the upper 40's  By Wednesday evening, it looks like the heavier rain may fall.  The rain may continue into Thursday, before turning over to snow by late afternoon, with a temperature high in the upper 30's.   By Friday, the temperatures are expected to plunge down into the teens with possibly more snow.  Saturday through President's weekend is expected to be clear, with a temperature high in the mid 20's.  We'll see what develops.

Old Forge  --  A Recipe For Great Conditions...
By Magnum
Thurs
day, 5 February 2009, at 1:09 a.m.
The temperature is approximately 3 F degrees. Wednesday day was mostly sunny, with a temperature high in the single digits. Traffic in the area has been low all week.

Tonight, the trails are hard packed, with loose snow on top.  South of Thendara towards White Lake was in good condition. Continuing South to Forestport and Alder Creek was in good condition. Heading towards Boonville was groomed and in good condition.  The Railroad tracks heading to Big Moose Station were in good condition, with drifting snow.  Be alert to where the rails are exposed. Trail 1 heading out of Old Forge was groomed and in good to excellent condition.  Trail 3 was groomed and in good to excellent condition.  Trails 7, 8, and 9 were groomed and in good condition. Trail 10 was groomed and in good condition.  As you travel on Trail 5 towards Route 28, the roads have good snow cover. Continuing on Trail 5 past Daiker’s Inn was groomed and in good condition. Heading through Inlet was in good condition. Continuing towards Moose River Plains was in good condition. Passing Limekiln Lake, through the Moose River Pains was groomed and in good condition.  The snow depths increased as you approach the Big T as well.  Heading North to Stillwater, using Big Moose Road, has thin to limited snow coverage through Eagle Bay. Heading North on Stillwater Road to Stillwater has better cover, past Trail 2 and 10. Heading South to Brantingham was in good to fair condition. Continuing past the Pine Tree Inn, has good to thin snow cover. Continuing to the drive-in theater and the RVI Restaurant, near Rt.12, has good to thin snow coverage and was in fair condition.

"Cuore U". Ride At Your Own Risk.

There's a chance of scattered snow on Thursday, with a temperature high in the single digits.  There's a chance of scattered flurries on Friday, with a temperature high in the mid teens.  Saturday day is expected to be clear, with a temperature high in the upper 30's.  There's a chance of rain Saturday evening.  Snow is in the forecast for Sunday, with temperature highs in the mid 30's.  Monday is expected to be clear.  Tuesday through Wednesday may bring freezing rain.  We'll see what develops.
