Magnum
Monday, 31 March 2008, at 1:19 a.m.

The temperature is approximately 36 F degrees. Sunday was a mix of sun and clouds, with a temperature high in the upper 30‘s. There’s approximately 6 to 16 inches of snow in Old Forge and approximately 8 to 24+ inches on the higher elevation areas like Stillwater. The lower elevation areas like Forestport and Boonville and Brantingham have approximately 8 to 24 inches of snow on the ground. These are estimated snow depths on average. Traffic in the area was busy through the weekend, as this is the last weekend of the season…

Tonight, the trails are a loose, snow/ice, base. The recent snow was a great boost and helped the area to allow one last weekend of riding. With the combination of higher temperatures and traffic, the trails weren’t the best, but allowed a final ride of the season. South of Thendara towards White Lake was in good to fair condition. Be alert on the turns as some are thin and icy. Continuing South to Forestport and Alder Creek was in fair to good condition. Be alert on the turns as some are thin to bare and icy. Heading towards Boonville was in fair to good condition through the woods and then gets a little sketchy in the open areas. Be alert on the turns as some are thin to bare and icy. The Railroad tracks heading to Big Moose Station are covered, and in fair to good condition. Be alert to where the rails are exposed. Trail 1 heading out of Old Forge was in fair to good condition, with some slushy/wet and thin areas. Trail 3 was in good to fair condition. Be alert on the turns as some are thin and icy. Trail 8 is in good to fair condition. Trails 7, 9 and 10 were in fair to good condition, with some thin to bare areas. Be alert on the turns as some are thin to bare, icy and bumpy. As you travel on Trail 5 towards Route 28, the trail has thin to bare areas. The closer you get to Daiker‘s, the snow cover improves. The roads have limited snow cover. Continuing on Trail 5 past Daiker’s Inn was in fair to good condition, with thin to bare spots and a few slushy, wet spots as well. Heading North of Big Moose Arctic-Cat/Yamaha is thin and wet, with bare areas. Heading through Inlet is in fair to good condition, with thin to bare areas. The sidewalks are mostly covered as well. Continuing towards Moose River Plains was in fair to poor condition, with thin to bare and icy areas. Be alert on the turns as they are thin, bare and icy as well. Passing Limekiln Lake, through the Moose River Pains was in fair to good condition towards the beginning, with thin to bare spots. The snow depths increased and the conditions improve as you approach the Big T intersection. Heading North to Stillwater, using Big Moose Road, has limited to no snow coverage towards Eagle Bay. Heading North on Stillwater Road to Stillwater has limited cover. Heading South to Brantingham was in fair condition, with thin to bare and icy, wet spots, especially on the turns. Continuing past the Pine Tree Inn, has limited snow cover on the roads. The snowmobile trails heading to Burdicks Crossing and the Hill, has good snow cover on the trail. Continuing to the drive-in theater and the RVI Restaurant, near Rt 12, is in fair condition.

A few added notes… WOW, what a season!! It always seems to go so fast. I know in the ol’ days the snow was plentiful through the Winter, however in the last eight seasons I’ve been producing AbsoluteSnowmobile, we’ve never had snow and relatively good riding conditions from the opening day of snowmobiling to the last day of the season. Not only did many of you get your ride in, many of you had a chance to venture out and find new destinations and loops, reinventing you visit. That’s one of the greatest aspects to visiting the area, is the many choices you have to ride.

For those of you that ride until the snow is gone, use the link below to check out the Tug Hill Reports. The Tug Hill area has about twice the amount of snow and many of the trails on the higher elevation areas are open until there’s mud. These are seasonal roads and are open to all registered and insured vehicles. Be alert to private property and trails that are closed.

Speaking of mud… For those of you that ride ATV’s, use the link below to check out AbsoluteATV.com. Although there aren’t any ATV trails in the Old Forge area, there are about 500 miles and more being added, on the Tug Hill side. There have been big improvements to the trail system and there are many ATV events & activities. Also note that there is a new version of AbsoluteATV that will be online shortly. It‘ll look and be easy to navigate just like AbsoluteSnowmobile.

Finally, I’d like to thank all the local businesses that help support AbsoluteSnowmobile. I greatly appreciate all of you viewers that have supported AbsoluteSnowmobile and it’s sponsors over the years. Countless businesses have said that AbsoluteSnowmobile was their best source of advertising. It was an absolute pleasure having the chance to meet many of you and I can‘t thank ALL of you enough for your loyal support. THANK YOU & have a safe Spring and Summer!

Traffic in the area was very slow on Thursday.

Tonight, the trails are a soft, snow/ice, base, with loose snow on top. The recent snow really pumped life into the trail system. The area trails will actually be better as the groomers will probably be out aaaaall day, smoothing out the new snow. You can see on the Rider Cam photos that not only is the area covered, the trouble spots like the Railroad bed, trail 5 and most of the turns are very well covered. It’s not often we get such good riding conditions over here so late in the season. It looks like the weather will not only hold out for this weekend, but it appears snow will be falling through next Thursday. Old Forge’s trails close April 1, 2008. You should be able to ride until the trails actually close, which is rare, at least in the last 8 years I’ve been reporting the trails. Take advantage of the snow while it’s here. Traffic in the area was slow on Sunday. Saturday the area temperatures rose well above freezing, with a little rain. The trails didn‘t hold up long. Many were happy to get a last ride in. As with last year, we can very easily get another heavy snow storm through the area towards the end of the month.

Tonight, the trails are a hard packed, ice/snow, base. Keep in mind that with bare spots starting to show, a trail could be in relatively good condition, however the bare spots will degrade the conditions. South of Thendara towards White Lake was in fair to good condition. Be alert on the turns as some are thin to bare and icy. Continuing to the drive-in theater and the RVI Restaurant, near Rt 12, is in fair to poor condition. You may want to drive by vehicle to Brantingham. It’s been reported that Brantingham’s club is done for the season. There’s still a lot of snow on Tug Hill. Unfortunately the clubs are using the smallest excuse not to groom. Follow the Tug Hill report to see how the conditions are. Stay tuned…

As an added note… I’m really excited to announce the conception of something revolutionary. Many of you have been downloading and listening to I.R.O.C. & Beyond Snowmobile show. It’s a great and informative show on snowmobiling and it’s been an honor to be a frequent guest. Recently a nationwide media group, focusing on ATV’s, as well as major sponsors, have taken interest in the I.R.O.C. show and are looking to take it to a higher level. Lee has asked Magnum to join him as a co host and develop not just an ATV show, but a show geared around all motorized recreation. Each episode will be captured on video, just like a Cable TV Show. Currently many of us don’t get the outdoor cable channels on TV. Even if you do, they don’t address issues and locations that effect you the rider. I know this last weekend was the last ride for many of you, but I just wanted to let know to check back as I’ll be offering more info shortly. The fist few shows will focus on Motorcycles, watercraft, ATV’s and warm weather activities. As the temperatures drop, the show will shift to cold weather recreation and activities.  Best of all it‘ll include you the viewer, with write in questions and location interviews. Stop back and I’ll have more info for you…

When riding the area, be alert to stumps, rocks and debris, shielded by snow. Open fields are full of hidden surprises. Just stay on the marked trails and you'll be fine. Be alert to riding on lakes and reservoirs. Always talk to locals before riding on what appears to be frozen water. Ride At Your Own Risk..

Monday day, through the evening is expected to be clear, with a temperature high in the upper 20’s. Snow is expected on Tuesday, with a temperature high in the mid to upper 30‘s. Wednesday may bring rain with a temperature high in the lower 40‘s. Thursday may bring snow, with a temperature high in the upper 20‘s. Friday through the weekend is expected to be clear. We‘ll keep an eye on the middle of the week. The precipitation could very well fall as snow. We’ll see what develops…

As an added note… It’s been an absolute crazy week. From the craziness with my site to Mother Nature’s roller costar or weather. Those of you that were traveling to the area Friday night were probably regretting it until you got close to the area. Just South of the area was receiving POURING RAIN. Then just like flipping a switch, you drove into a heavy snow. Then by mid day Saturday, the freezing rain an rain started to fall, pushing people into the local business, with the hopes it would change. Unfortunately it didn’t… Suddenly, the forecast truly takes a turn with 4 to 8 inches of new snow in the forecast. Some were frustrated with the current weather and left early. The pouring rain was a “buzz-kill”. Worst was the widespread power outages through the area. It definitely crippled and may have even caused more riders to pack it in early. Those that stuck it out, awoke to 3 to 6 inches of new snow and some pretty good riding. I apologize again for not getting the reports up in time, or the cams that may not have been updating, but the area wide power outages have been the culprit. I recommend riding the area trails between now and Wednesday. We may see some rain on Thursday and Friday. A lot can happen between now and then. This weekend is an example of how the weather can drastically change in a very short amount of time.

Monday is expected to be clear through the evening, with a temperature high in the upper teens. Tuesday day is expected to be clear, with a temperature high in the upper 20’s. Snow may fall by Tuesday night and continue through Wednesday night. Thursday through Friday may bring a mix of rain and snow. Saturday through Sunday may bring more snow, with a temperature high in the lower 30‘s. We’ll see what develops…

Old Forge -- Beyond Your Imagination...
Magnum
Friday, 7 March 2008, at 5:59 a.m.

The temperature is approximately 24 F degrees. The sun was out for most of the day on Thursday and a temperature high in the upper 30‘s. There’s approximately 10 to 28+ inches of snow in Old Forge and approximately 12 to 38+ inches on the higher elevation areas like Stillwater. The lower elevation areas like Forestport and Boonville and Brantingham have approximately 8 to 30+ inches of snow on the ground. These are estimated snow depths on average. The area hasn’t lost too much snow over the last few days, with the area receiving the unfavorable weather. Traffic in the area was and has been very low. This has helped the trails stay in good shape.

Tonight, the trails are a hard packed, snow/ice, base, with inches of loose snow on top. South of Thendara towards White Lake was in good condition. Be alert on the turns as some are thin and icy. Continuing South to Forestport and Alder Creek was in good condition. Be alert on the turns as some are thin to bare and icy. Heading towards Boonville was in good to fair condition. Be alert on the turns as some are thin to bare and icy. The Railroad tracks heading to Big Moose Station are covered, and in good condition. Be alert to where the rails are exposed. Trail 1 heading out of Old Forge was in good condition, with a couple icy spots. Trail 3 was in good to excellent condition. Be alert on the turns as some are bumpy and very loose. Trails 7, 8, 9 and 10 were in good condition. Be alert on the turns as some are thin and bumpy. As you travel on Trail 5 towards Route 28, the roads have limited to no snow cover on the plowed road. Continuing on Trail 5 past Daiker’s Inn, has good cover and was in good condition. Heading through Inlet is mostly covered and in good condition. The sidewalks are well covered as well. Continuing towards Moose River Plains was in good to fair condition, with thin to bare and icy spots. Be alert on the turns as some are thin to bare and icy as well. Passing Limekiln Lake, through the Moose River Pains was in good condition and a couple thin to bare spots towards the beginning. The snow depths increased and the conditions improve as you approach the Big T. Heading North to Stillwater, using Big Moose Road, has limited to no coverage towards Eagle Bay. Heading North on Stillwater Road to Stillwater has better cover, past Trail 2 and 10. Heading South to Brantingham was in good to fair condition, with thin to bare and icy spots, especially on the turns. Continuing past the Pine Tree Inn, has limited to no snow cover on the roads. The snowmobile trails heading to Burdicks Crossing and the Hill, has limited snow cover. Continuing to the drive-in theater and the RVI Restaurant, near Rt 12, has limited cover and was in good to fair condition. The area roads took a beating with the sun out and warmer temperatures. Luckily I have pictures of the trails, because you would not believe how good the trails are. I’d estimate that 97% to 99% of the area trails are covered. Even the turns have good cover. The areas that are thin to bare will get a shot of fresh snow, between now and Saturday. We could get a sizable storm.

As an added note… I can see why so many rely on AbsoluteSnowmobile. There is not ONE source that have correctly reported the area conditions, including the local radio station that has been reporting the area trails as fair to poor. Tug Hill would “Kill” for these conditions. Old Forge’s trails are in good to excellent condition. Only because of the a couple thin to bare and wet spots have I not reported the trails as Excellent. The trails leading into Old Forge, as well as the area trails are flat and awesome! With the exception of plowed roads and paved intersections, I dare say the conditions couldn’t be any better and I support my opinion with photos. There’s may only a be a couple good weekends left, don’t wait!! Stay tuned…

Friday day bring a Winter mix after 4 pm, with the temperature highs in the lower 30‘s. By Friday evening, more snow may fall, with 3 to 5 inch of new accumulation. Saturday day through Sunday day is expected, with another 3 to 5 inches of new snow and a temperature high in the upper 20’s. Sunday night, through Tuesday day is expected to be clear, with a temperature high in the mid to upper 20‘s. Snow Showers are in the forecast towards the end of the week. We’ll see what develops…

Old Forge -- Murphy's Law...
Magnum
Thursday, 6 March 2008, at 3:19 a.m.

Hey boys an girls...  I apologize for not having a report up.  Regretfully, while updating over 15 pages of the site, including the Trail Conditions page, the pages had a glitch, which made them not viewable.  All the pages had to be recreated.  I just did over two weeks of Internet work in four days, not to mention running around, keeping everything running.  Those not familiar with Murphy's Law, the short of it - At the worst possible moment, the worst possible thing will happen.

So I wasn't taking time off or I didn't take a break because we had a little unfavorable weather.  As a matter of fact there was an extremely important issue that needed an immediate response from all riders.  Although we've missed the deadline, it'll still be important to voice your opinion, so stop back and I should have everything updated by tonight.

As for the conditions...  The area is in good shape and still very ridable.  Keep in mind that most of the area has over two feet of snow.  Monday really didn't generate any rain.  Tuesday was warm, which loosened everything up and the thin areas became very slushy.  Tuesday into Wednesday the area received freezing rain/ice chunks and most of the wet and slushy areas froze up.  All trails are still very passable.  Trails that had a foot or more of snow, which is 80% to 90% of trails, weren't even effected by the recent weather bump in the road.  Even the thin areas have mostly frozen over and are very passable

I'll be out all day Thursday gathering photos and video of the trails so you can see the area for yourself and you can make your own decision.

I appreciate all of your concerns.  I know how many of you were going through withdrawals, without your AbsoluteSnowmobile fix.  It also helps riders and area business appreciate how valuable this FREE service that AbsoluteSnowmobile provides.

Everything Should be back to normal by tonight.

Sunday day is expected to be clear and windy, with the temperature highs in the lower 20‘s. By Sunday evening, more snow may fall, with less than an inch or new accumulation. There’s a chance of rain early on Monday morning and possibly later in the afternoon. By evening the rain may get heavier, with quarter of an inch of rain, and a temperature high around the upper 30‘s. Tuesday through Saturday is expected to bring more snow, with a temperature high in the upper 20’s. Some of the thinner areas may get a little mushy and sloppy, but there is a lot of snow on the ground and the rain will be more of an inconvenience than the end of good conditions. In addition, with snow in the forecast on the heels of the new snow, the rain could help to create a more solid base, with fresh fluff on top. We’ll see what develops…
