For years riders have asked about a reliable site for
weather forecasts in the surrounding areas. Even the weather
channel on TV often fails to accurately forecast and even
report on area conditions.
What most people don't realize is that the weather sites and
TV get their weather info from local and major airports.
There's no weather station in every zip code in the US. The
weather for our area comes from Utica in the South (45 Miles
away & 1000+ foot lower in elevation) and Fort Drum in the
North (45 Miles away & a lower elevation). Neither
are close enough to give an accurate forecast.
Often a local business will receive a call from from a rider
wanting to know how much snow the area received? The
business responds... It's not snowing... The caller
responds saying "Well the TV says it is..."
It's not that anyone is looking to lie, however not only is
it difficult to forecast the area weather, because of its
geographical location off of Lake Ontario and it's unique
elevation and terrain, the weather can unpredictably change
within hours.
Generally the 24-48 hour forecast will be the most accurate
and reliable. I've found the weather links below pretty
accurate. The zip code for the area is preset.
I report on the actual area weather through the
Trail Reports page. Combine the two for an idea of
area conditions.
